A location for local experience
Excellent location to explore George town and Penang as the locals see it. All levels of eating establishment, market and bus stops all within 5 minute walk. Old style house and décor, but with full amenities, and the local activities add to experience. Service provided and condition of accommodation was very good.

Totally authentic, historic Chinese town house, comprehensively updated
This stay is perfect for those seeking an experience of living in an authentic house in Penang's Chinatown. The house is in the UNESCO heritage zone, which means any external renovations have to be in the true original style, meaning wooden shutters, tiled front verandah, appropriate colours for paintwork, etc. Inside you have modern comforts, such as air conditioning throughout, a fully functional kitchen, hot water, cable TV with heaps of channels, good free wifi, and comfortable beds. There's an enormous range of restaurants, from Penang street food (the best in Malaysia) to international fine dining within walking distance, and the area is completely safe at all hours day or night. If you would like to stay here you should be aware that it is city living, which means that at times you might hear some noise in the mornings or at times during the day, but we did not find this a problem, it was only at reasonable times, and not disturbing. The owner, Meng Yau, was very communicative and prompt in his responses. Thoroughly recommended, excellent value for money.

Great clean house in good location - what a bargain!
We very much enjoyed our stay in this house with our two children - it was so nice to stay somewhere absolutely spotless, esp as we had just come from the Belum jungle where the bugs were BIG and everywhere! - sorry Pat but one took a ride in our suitcase and escaped into your house (don't worry I got it!). When chatting to taxi drivers etc they could not believe what a bargain we had for this house! Location was excellent: - quiet and safe - don't know why anyone would think otherwise. We never felt unsafe anywhere and we had our children with us! - near to shops and loads of food options (sure one of the reasons to come to Penang in the first place!) - easy to find from Comtar which is of course a landmark you can always reach from wherever you've been Pat and Alan were very helpful both at the booking stage and when we arrived. The only funny thing is the first email from Pat discouraged us from staying as we had 2 children - but after I persisted, she put a perfectly adequate second bed in the second bedroom and everything was fine for the 4 of us. The advert still discourages children . . . The house had everything we needed - washing machine and hanging area was great. Lopadds of space for the 4 of us. My only criticism (and this applies to lots of accommodation in Malaysia, though not other tropical Asian countries) is that some of the house is open to the outside world with no option to keep out the mosquitoes. Those of us with succulent white skin (esp. my sone!) are a magnet for mozzies so it would have been nice to shut the little blighters out! But, as I say, we stayed in many places with that issue . . . Anyway, many thanks for a great stay in a great city. Sorry this review is a little late, but I only just found it on trip advisor!

Nice home, bad location, wouldn't go out at night walking
We didn't notice the bars on the windows or the doors before we rented. Double locks on doors, plus really nasty walk ways. All the neighbors also had bars and locks. The home itself is very nice except for really poor lighting if one would like to read. Going outside during the day or at night is a nightmare, as a lot of the sewers are not covered. Be very careful walking as it is an old neighborhood.

We are sorry that you did not enjoy your stay at our Green House Terraces as so many have done so and returned so many times to us in Penang! But to answer some of your concerns that caused you such disappointment. Yes, our houses are Heritage homes in the centre of the UNESCO listed George Town in Penang, they have been totally renovated on the inside to bring it to a standard that makes everyday living comfortable and familiar whilst restoring the facade to original as is required by the UNESCO guide lines. The whole of the little cul-de-sac has the original homes, all more or less identical, one of it's attractions as they have mostly retained their original features...this include the bars at the windows with internal timber shutters as ALL homes built at the turn of the century period had this as part of their architecture as glazing was not generally in use except amongst the mansions, same for the doors, all Chinese homes of the period had an outer door as well as an inner one as it was usual to leave the shutters on the windows and inner doors open for 'air conditioning'! We of course also have the modern day version. The inner doors have normal household dead locks as we considered the original padlocks a little too authentic!! We have a similar house ourselves with the same set-up. To alter these outer features is against the rules in the Heritage area and if you look at anything to do with the period homes in George Town, you will see that this is the case. Your other issues re. lighting, I am not sure I understand as our places have normal overhead lighting all through plus a double standing lamp over the lounge and chair in the living area and also bedside lamps in the bedrooms, if the wattage was not sufficient for you, we would have happily supplied an alternative wattage or lamp! The neighbours have been a huge plus for our guests as they are always interested in the countries our visitors come from and make a point of of saying "hello" and making friends! As for walking in George Town, Yes it's correct that it is an old city, with what is known as 5 ft ways (covered areas in front of shops)and lots of ups and downs, the 'oldness' of it is it's attraction, we have plenty of Malls for those who prefer them! The "sewers" you speak of are storm water drains! There are NO open sewers in the city! Being a tropical Island, we can have short torrential, warm downpours and without these deep run-aways, we would all flood! It is also the safest city I have EVER lived in! In all of our time living here, our guests, even our neighbours, have never had any sort of incident plus across from our street entrance is the main Penang Police Station, what can I say! The bottom line re this is yes, you do have to watch were you walk as it is not like a shopping mall and certainly not like California....That's George Towns attraction for tourists, and it's people, it's like no where else and that's what keeps people coming back. We think the photo's show all that I have written of here and we certainly hope you have better luck in the future. There are many modern condo's in Malaysia as well, more suitable if the Heritage aspect is not for you. My husband and I are very proud of our homes and the heritage of this city, and enjoy showing it off to our guests! Any questions, feel free to email us. Pat and Alan

Good accomodation in an excellent location at a fair price
We had been looking for a place to stay for a few weeks in Penang that was self contained, near to the centre of George Town and at a reasonable price. This property seemed to fit the bill so we contacted the owner. From our first contact until we had to say goodbye the attention to detail from the owners, Alan & Pat, was second to none. The property did what it said on the box and we spent a very happy and comfortable six weeks here. We would have no hesitation in recommending this as an outstanding 'home from home' choice for a long stay in this vibrant location.
