Unfortunately our flight was delayed due to bad weather so we didn't arrive at the flat until around 11:30pm, but Cristina was there to greet us and show us around; and she sat down and went through a local map with us, pointing out the best places to visit which we greatly appreciated.
The flat is on the 2nd floor with no lift but the stairs are easy to navigate with cases, and its location on Rua das Flores was perfect: only a short walk to the tram stop, the riverfront, or the local districts. There is also a lovely bakery nearby that Cristina recommended (have the sweet yellow bread rolls with coconut on top for breakfast - delicious!) and a small supermarket within walking distance, as well as numerous restaurants and Saõ Bento train station at the end of the road.
There is a large entrance hall area with lots of cupboards for storage (the hairdryer was a great bonus!), a spacious kitchen diner (we didn't cook anything but it is well equipped) and a large double bedroom plus a big bathroom with a very powerful shower - don't have it on full or you'll soak the floor!!
The only negative, which is beyond John and Cristina's control but important to note, is that they are fully renovating the building next door, so from 8am to 5pm there were builders chipping away at the plaster on the outside of the building and drilling, which was not really the sound you wanted to wake up to (unlike the cathedral bells which were a lovely 8am alarm clock!) nor have constantly when you came home in the afternoon for a rest!! Thankfully Corpus Christi gave us a blissful day off on the Thursday, but it is worth bearing in mind if you are not planning to be up and out all day.
One excellent tip from Cristina was to take the tram to its final stop then walk along the coast to Matosinhos - it's quite a way but worth it for the fresh fish lunch (head to Rua Heróis de França for a selection of roadside restaurants where they cook the fish outside) when you get there, and you can take the 500 bus back!
