After a short drive from Taormina, Salvo met us and showed us the way to their lovely rental. When we arrived, we were warmly greeted by Debora and Irene, making us feel as though we were part of the family. What gracious hosts, and a wonderful family! We rented Rosa Dei Venti, which was beautiful and immaculately maintained. We made several trips to the supermarket and the local Panificio near Borgo Borghese (great bread and cookies). The first few days were terrific until my husband suffered from a bout with food poisoning. After two days in excruciating pain, we were in dire need of medical assistance. Debora, always extremely kind and accommodating, took the time out of her day to bring us to Dott. Francesco Panasiti for treatment. Within a day, my husband was feeling much better and we were able to resume our vacation! What a godsend Debora is:). Debora and Salvo checked in with us regularly to make sure all was well, and to find out how we spent our day. The highlight of our stay most definitely was donkey trekking along the pirate's route to Savoca with Salvo and Mario. We learned about the history of the area and the local flora and fauna. Mario kept us well fed along the route picking almonds, cutting cactus fruit, and picking grapes for us. We learned which plants are edible, and which ones are not; Salvo also introduced us to wild fennell. Upon arrival in Savoca, we learned about the fascinating history complete with a tour of the village. Our perfect day got even better when we went to Dionisio Savoca to cook with Andrea Morabito, which we absolutely loved. We made Bruschetta, Spaghetti Alla Bottarga Di Tonno, and Involtini Di Pesce Spada. Afterwards, we all sat down outside to enjoy our beautiful lunch, taking in the spectacular views of the countryside and Chiesa di Santa Lucia. La Dolce Vita at its' best with great views, great food, and great wine, all enjoyed with our new friends! It doesn't get any better than that!! Our day came to an end and we trekked back to Borgo Borghese, an end to the most perfect day ever. During our stay, we drove to Catania and Siracusa, spending a day at each location; both beautiful places with much to see. Sadly, our time at Borgo Borghese was up and it was time to go home. We left having met new friends, and took with us the many fond memories of our time spent there.
