Completely puzzled at hosts' behaviour
Ordinarily I do not post any negative reviews on TripAdvisor because there is no need to do so; if an establishment has questionable quality, there are usually already many negative reviews posted. However, in the case of the Birdhouse Cabin at Marsh Lake, I felt compelled to tell fellow travellers of my time there in hopes that no one else will experience the same.
My 16 year old daughter and I arrived for one night stay in July 2017. We are experienced campers and adventurous world travellers so the "off-grid" nature of the accommodation did not affect our opinion of the property (although I was surprised at the cost of a night's stay given the services offered - I chalked this up to my having read the description too quickly).
When we arrived, our host Hendrik's wife met us on the driveway and directed us to the appropriate parking spot near the cabin. On the way to our parking spot, we negotiated our way around several children's bicycles/tricycles, other children's toys left on the sides of the driveway, and the family dog running free around our car.
After parking, our host showed us around the property and offered us her bear spray as we mentioned we wanted to take a walk down to the lake. After making ourselves at home on the property and using the outhouse, we went out for a walk. Upon returning to the cabin from our walk, we heard a rustling outside the cabin. I went out to find Hendrik standing below the porch. I greeted him. He proceeded to tell me that we drove over his son's remote control toy truck when we arrived. He also explained to me that he had warned his son that he might want to put the truck away because guests were arriving but his son declined. I expressed my surprise to hear that we had driven over the toy as I never heard or felt any crunching while we drove up the driveway. Hendrik invited me to come and look at the broken pieces he had saved for me to see. Given his son's acknowledged negligence in leaving the toy on the driveway, I asked if Hendrik was seeking an apology or compensation for the toy. He said that what I did with the information he shared was up to me, he just felt it was his duty "as a father" to inform me of my transgression. He said he was having to deal with a very sad toddler who had just received the second-hand truck that very day and now the toy didn't work. I said that I would sleep on the information and get back to him the next day with my decision about what to do about the truck.
Back in the cabin, my daughter assured me that there was absolutely NO WAY we had driven over a toy truck. Puzzled and nervous, we went to bed and tried to make the best of our last night in the Yukon.
Upon checkout the next morning, I asked Hendrik's wife to inspect the cabin to ensure that everything was in order and my $350 damage deposit would be returned (because by now I was very concerned about the deposit not being returned in retribution for the damaged toy). She stated that we would receive a refund for the deposit in full. I requested a signed note as insurance. She provided the note and I have received my damage deposit in full 10 days after my stay.
I then inquired about how I could possibly have driven over the toy and she motioned to show me how we drove around the bicycles and veered a sharp left into the truck that was left further off to the left of the bicycles. She stated that I ran over the truck with my left back wheel and she had heard the crunch even though I did not. At that point, I noticed her young son playing with a yellow toy truck on the porch of the home. It was a remote control truck with a control wire that was cut. I asked if that was the truck I allegedly ran over. She stated yes. The frame of the truck was 100% intact. The only damage I could see was the cut wire. I expressed my shock at learning that this was the truck and explained that it was impossible that we ran over the truck with our 2 ton car because, if we had, the toy would be completely crushed. She proceeded to show me how the truck was broken and now unusable because the windshield (made of a firm plastic film) was not properly attached.
She reiterated, as her husband had the evening before, that they were having to deal with a very sad toddler. I suggested that I could apologize to the young boy to make him feel better. She gave me permission to do so, so I apologized to him. I also requested and was granted permission to photograph the toy truck he was playing with. I will post a picture of it on this review if I can figure out how to do it.
I declined to compensate the family for the car. I wished the host a good day and left the property. To this day, I am completely puzzled about the odd behaviour and motivation of these hosts. I would not return to this property or to either of the other two cabins located on the Marsh Lake Cabins property.

Marsh Lake Cabins & Adventures
Lindsay review sounds like we would have blamed her and her daughter for her action, but this is perhaps not true and as Lindsay mentioned, I have never asked her to reimburse her to do so.
Still, the review sounds like she has to defend herself, but not even that is necessary in all.
There was nothing to have a discussion about after I told Lindsay what happened in the driveway with our sons truck.
Anyway, setting us up as we would make things up makes me sad, but I am happy to look back and forward to so many other happy guests we had and will have before and after Lindsay.
