So I am going to write this review, good and bad as honestly as I can and give exactly how we felt about the place, the location etc, then it’s up to you to decide if you want to stay or not. We chose Mayambe because we wanted a quiet place away from the hustle and bustle and that is exactly what we got. What we expected was blown out the water by what we got and we thank Ernesto for giving us that. He is a great host and will do anything to help you, from recommending trips to any problem you may have in the Village.
Location, location, location!
If you are not driving to Mayambe it can be hard to find as taxi drivers don’t know exactly where to go. So just tell them you want to go to the Flamingos Restaurant or the El Meco ruins and get out there and walk the 2 or 5 minutes further on and look for the 3.5km sign (on the electric pole on the left) and you are there, and if you let Ernesto (the owner) know when you are coming he will watch out for you.
The location, for us, was ideal away from the hustle and bustle of Cancun city and the hotel district, but close enough to get the little bus if we wanted to go into the city. We also used the, free to use, bikes to cycle the 10-15 minutes away to the small local market to get food and also eat at some of the small Mexican food outlets that you can find easy enough. The food in these places is amazing and if you want a small snack to keep you going for less than 50 Mexican pesos (for 2 chicken tortillas) then stop and enjoy! It is also about a 50 minute walk to the ferry terminal which will take you to and from the Isla Muejers.
Although we never had a problem getting to where we wanted to go and were happy to walk or cycle, or jump on the small local mini bus Mayambe could be a pain for you to get to places if you like transport on demand and didn’t want to walk etc to go places. That’s said, don’t let it spoil your choice in staying here at all.
Mayambe also has the luxury of being just a 2 minute walk from Flamingos Restaurant. We recommend going at least once while you are there for not only the food but the ambience and the friendly staff, you won’t be disappointed, the surf `n` turf is highly recommended. As is the house red!
Its way better than a 4 star hotel. Honestly!
We have stayed in nice place,s and we have stayed bad places and Mayambe really is one of the nicest places we have stayed. We looked a t a good few place to stay in Cancun but Mayambe always kept our interest and we are glad we chose it over some other “Nicer” places in the hotel district or down town.
Yes it needs a little work but overall it was clean, quiet and actually better than we thought after reading other reviews on the place. Like Ernesto says he is doing what he can as he goes and I think with his hard work, and some time, he will have one of the nicest places to stay in Cancun in due course.
I read reviews on here and other sites where some were not pleased it wasn’t a 4-5 star hotel, or there was seaweed on the beach (more on that below), or it was little untidy etc etc, and yes this place is no 4 star hotel or luxury apartment. It is way better than that, and has something that those places don’t have; character and its own personality and we loved it, and we most definitely will be back.
Like we say it needs a little work here and there; the room could have done with a little colour just to get away from the white. The kitchen could have a little more equipment (proper cooker, ice machine maybe) to help cook meals while you are there, or for those nice cool drinks we all love while on the beach. But, there are enough smaller appliances to make a meal and a fridge/freezer to store and keep food or beer refrigerated while you are there.
Our room had a small fridge to store some food and drink which came in handy when we were out on the beach sunbathing and enjoying the amazing views of the Caribbean Sea, that is only 20 paces from the door of some of the rooms! The room was spacious enough for 2 and being able to open the sliding doors and be right on the beach was just amazing. The bed was more than comfy and the a/c worked well to keep us cool at night. The bathroom was clean and the shower, although slightly in the wrong place in the bathroom was adequate enough. I think the only thing the room could do with to make it more perfect was maybe an extra chair or two as the only place to sit was the bed, but really that is a very small thing and if it had not been for me being a red head I would have been out in the sun way more!
The pool was also adequate and although needed a little clean out (the storm before we got there had left its mark) it was still usable and you could enjoy its cooling waters in the heat of the day.
What, there is seaweed on the beach?
Yes there is some seaweed on the beach but really, who cares?
The sand is white and soft, the sea warm and so inviting to swim in. Take the Kayaks out and enjoy being out on the Caribbean having fun and forgetting your worries ($10usd for the whole day is a great deal). We loved the kayaks and once you get out on the water and look back at the beautiful views towards land or just enjoy being out on the waves of the Caribbean, the small things I mentioned above really go out the window and you realise just how lucky you where to have stayed here.
Although not as impressive as his neighbours piers, Ernesto has built a little area out over the sea to enjoy watching either the sunrise, the sunset (or both) and when the moon is out and it casts its light over the Caribbean, well you fall in love with Mayambe and find yourself lost in the beauty of the place and realise that staying here was one of the best ideas you have had.
Would we recommend Mayambe to our friends and family?
Absolutely! Yes it has one or two small issues but these disappear when you realise you really did find a little corner of paradise that you can escape in. If you want a quiet holiday away from the hotel district and the noise and hustle of down town Cancun then do not look past Mayambe, you really will not be disappointed. Don’t expect a 4 star place because this is not it, Mayambe is something way better and if you go with that in mind then you will have a holiday to remember and you will want to be back there once you return home.
