We spent over 6 wonderful weeks at Villa Bassi in April/May of this year (2017).
This classic Tuscan villa, while being away from major traffic routes, is ideally located to visit all the major cities in the idiyillic and history laden Italian region.
The accomdations are rustic but warm and comfortable, surrounded by books and family heirlooms and equipped w/ all necessary accessories to cook your own meals if you wish to do so.
Those familiar w/ the writings of Indro Montanelli will find, at the villa, many traces of the ties the author & journalist had with the Bassi family as well as many of his books. The Bassi-Montanelli museum, in nearby Fucecchio, offrs a complete review of his life and writings.
Pisa, Lucca, Siena, San Gimignano, Vinci, Volterra, Pistoia and many, many smaller but not less colorful & historic Tuscan towns, are all within easy reach by car. Florence is best and quickly reached by a combination of car (to Florence’s suburbs) and tram or train to city center.
The villa’s owners, who reside in Florence, were extremely thoughtful & attentive and went out of their way to make our stay an experience worth repeating.
Their love for the family’s ancient summer residence is apparent as is their pride in the Tuscan region. They made sure we visited many smaller towns and borgos that are not part of the normal tourist beaten path, but are often more charming than better known places.
You can spend your days travelling to the surrounding cities, towers and castles or just relaxing at the villa, “under the Tuscan sun”, reading, walking the extensive property, tending plants & flowers or hiking the nearby trails in the woods.
A 5-minute walk from the front door is the Nuovo Circolo a rustic but charming trattoria/bar, where a friendly espresso or delicious home-cooked meal can be had at “non-touristic” prices.
The town of Fucecchio, four miles away, offers every modern shop and convenience as well as ancient walls and towers, a quaint “old town” center, the Bassi-Montanelli museum and even night entertainment, in suggestive ancient surroundings, at the “La Limonaia” wathering hole.
Whether you are a lover of history, of nature or just need some true R&R, Villa Bassi and the Tuscan hills are without match and a perfect way to spend from mere days to weeks or even months of relaxing and inspiring vacation.
