In the 10th century, Polonnaruwa was established as the capital by the Cholas called Jananathapuram.
After 1070 the Chola rule of the island came to an end and the Polonnaruwa was occupied by Vijayabahu I of Polonnaruwa. It is also known as Maha Vijayabahu.
1070, Vijayabahu became the ruler of Polonnaruwa. Sri Lanka was then known as Thambapanni.
