Arrived, poor directional signage, site is conference center at National Labor College. Modern reception area (not initially clear that it's the check-in). Clerk could not find reservation, don't know if he did or not, but he provided a room at the expected rate. Rooms are located, essentially, in dorms. There is no way to access rooms other than via sidewalks across grounds (the campus is something like 45 acres, but the buildings are all close together). A map on the back of the "Student & Guest Guidebook" provided at check-in is not too helpful (not all buildings are marked). Arriving at the assigned room we discovered the small room hosted just one double bed, instead of the two queen-sized beds reserved. The bathroom was basic, with a simple shower (no tub), that showed evidence of some mildew/mold at the base. I called the front desk and noted I'd reserved two queen beds rather than one double bed. The clerk seemed flustered and asked if perhaps I could make do with one bed. I pointed out that it would be difficult as we were two adult women with one 6-year-old boy and it would be a bit crowded. He started to say he couldn't, but put me on hold (no music, just silence) for some minutes, then returned and said he could put me in a room with two beds. He was quite concerned that we had not sullied the room, in the time to fetch our bags from the far-off parking lot, hike to the room and call to request another room.
Returning to the desk to exchange the keycard, he again sought reassurance that we'd not dirtied the room. I assured him we had not even used the potty. Our new room was in another building and it was much nicer than the original room overall. The building smelled better (the info book indicates there are some smoking rooms in the previous building) and seemed more updated (the new room's building, in fact, isn't identified on the map). This room featured two beds (doubles not queens), two work stations and 1 small pre-digital television. The cable was fine, but the remote is not intuitive and required a bit of trial and error to figure out how to find full-screen channels. The bathroom, no tub--solely shower--was nicer than the original room with Corian-looking countertops and shower surround. There were two sets of Neutrogena brand toiletries on hand (shampoo, conditioner and facial soap) and two sets of towels. There is no peeohole on the door.
Building 4 apparently houses a fitness center and a bar. As we were only here one night, so did not utilize either. There is on-site dining, but again we did not avail ourselves to the food.
Overall, the room was clean and simply appointed. Our 2nd room had windows that opened and a lovely view of the meadow. One could hear the constant roar of the Beltway next door, but the campus is green and placid.
The area is technically Silver Spring in Montgomery County, the Hillandale section. There is ample free parking, albeit quite a hike from the rooms. The wifi connection was excellent, however, despite suggested fixes in the Kirkland Center's Student & Guest Guidebook, I was unable to connect to any web pages. The guidebook tried to address connectivity issues, but did not provide a working solution for me. Based on my prior experiences with the misanthropic desk clerk, I chose not to pursue further assistance from the front desk.
PROs: price, location, peacefulness
CONs: rooms too far from cars, DiscoverCard not accepted, outmoded televisions, bed seemed kind of worn, need better www connectivity or clear directions
