Rustic but everything you need. If you are expecting luxury this is not for you, but the rooms and bar, food etc are all great. Not many chalet's so you pretty much have a private lodge with a beach bar and a short walk to Tofo main town along the beach.
NOTE - This lodge is staffed during the peak seasons. You can go out of season, but you should know that you will be pretty much on your own with a skeleton staff. There will be power during the day and water, and you can probably arrange meals, but the bar and restaurant will be closed. So out of season, it's best to be prepared. Still amazing though if you are.

Excitedly booked a trip to the earth lodge for 12 nights. Was in direct contact with the owner multiple times and asked a lot of questions as I was a female solo traveller. My requirements included my safety (most important), having 3 meals a day (I paid for full board), having activities onsite (e.g. yoga), and a bar to lounge at (I like wine). The owner said all of this was at the earth lodge (and more!).
Arrived in tofo after 26 hours of travel and awaited my airport pick up by a staff member of the lodge. He arrived 20 minutes late saying he was told I was arriving the following day. All I wanted was a good meal and a shower and to settle into my accommodations as I was exhausted. The driver said we needed to get groceries and eat at a restaurant before going to the lodge. I was not interested in doing either but he insisted. At the restaurant he starting asking what I wanted for my meals during my stay. I told him that I paid for full board and would just simply order off the menu at the restaurant. This is when he launched into the reality of my earth lodge stay.....
1. The lodge was closed the off season.
2. They were still accepting tourists but, as it turned out, I was the only person booked to stay on the property for 12 days.
3. The restaurant and bar weren’t open.
4. There was no staff.
5. There were no activities on site, as everything was closed.
6. Full board in these circumstances meant the staff member would visit my Casa 3 times a day to feed me.
He then proceeded to stop at a local grocery store where I had to pick out some food items. 4 hours after landing in tofo (and after 26 hours travel), we finally left for the lodge. The lodge is about 3 Kms from anything. We pulled up to the property and were met by two guards. We drove to my Casa which was very very basic. A generator was on at the time, but there was no power otherwise (and it’s pitch dark at 5pm....which is when we arrived). He assured me the generator would be on until 9pm (it went off at 7pm). He gave me a few battery operated lanterns, told me a guard would sit outside my Casa all night (on the front porch), put my food items in a plastic box, and left.
I didn’t see how the front door could lock. There was nowhere to charge my phone (for the short time the generator was on). I didn’t feel safe showering with the man directly outside of the flimsy door. I didn’t feel safe sleeping either. I turned on all the lanterns, got in bed with my clothes on, texted some contacts to let them know my exact location because I didn’t feel safe, and waited until morning.
Its important I note that I am experienced with travel to Africa and at ease being a solo traveller....so I wasnt being overly dramatic.
The only good thing that happened in ANY of this was that I got data on my phone when I arrived and (by chance) met an American expat at the restaurant I had to eat at and got her number. I texted her at 6am and told her to get me the hell out of there. Thankfully for her and her kindness, by 830 am I was set up somewhere different. I’d highly recommend you look her up if you are in tofo (Kate Bella)...she’ll hook you up with all things awesome.
After ALL of the above, I then had to argue with the owner of the lodge for a few weeks to try and get my 50% deposit back that I paid when reserved my stay. After getting back to Europe I finally received it back.
Tofo is awesome. The Earth Lodge is not.
Thanks for listening :)

I think we were one of the 1st bookings after the Cyclone and the lodges rebuild. We were 3 groups so we stayed in 3 of the lodges. For me it was a working holiday but the other 2 groups were on holiday. Earth Lodge was perfect for this.
The lodge I stayed in was clean and fully kitted for self catering with a gas fridge. The electricity/generator is not run all the time but at the right times of day to get what you need done.
I was lucky as I tested their new solar powered battery packs with a 220v outlet. This meant I was able to charge my phone, torches, run 2 very powerful lights at night and I was able to run my laptop off the 240v outlet - perfect for me and the others.
There is no hot water but in minimum 28 cel, from 08:00 till 21:00 the water out the shower is HOT.
The management and staff are fantastic and on call 24/7. Joao the manager goes out of his way to ensure you have a good stay and want for nothing - including a freshly opened coconut of your own to drink the milk and eat the flesh - yumm
The resort is secluded with your own private beach but its a short drive to town. You can walk if you want - all the locals do.
Their support of the local community with fresh water is amazing. This was crucial after the cyclone as the local water supply was contaminated but the Lodges well water was not.
We met some amazing locals and made new friends for life - we will be going back!

There is little if anything on the website for Tofo Earth Lodge, that after visiting the place for 5 nights, we consider to be based in truth.
A night’s accommodation here will get you a 3 star hotel in Muputo, or a Travelodge in central London. Tofo Earth Lodge is not by a long way a cheap place to stay, nor it is a comfortable place to stay. It’s a very long way from being value for money.
The place was hit by the Cyclone in February 2017, when we booked we knew this, and were assured it would be back up and running. We had a car with tents on the roof, so we had a plan-b if need be. Plan-b was needed. We thought from the website we were supporting a community project, in reality we felt scammed with a 4th rate product at a 1st rate price.
There are 3 “Cassa” that are in a fit state to stay in – the structure of the building, and the roofing are beautiful, however this comment is that last positive one I can make. All the other buildings are in various states of disrepair, some being outright dangerous. The Restaurant is also at best dangerous, with no hint of any ability to serve even a can of coke.
The “Cassa” we had was apparently for 3 persons self-catering. The single bed was terrible, with a comfort rating of zero. Its position in the house, left you feeling very exposed – the tents on the roof of the car were a far superior option all round. The activities on the website, are mostly based in town, you need to enjoy walking of have a 4x4, it’s a good trek into town. Unless you are self-catering, you again need that 4x4. Self-catering is a joke, fridge did not work (we had one in the car), 1 fork, 2 knives, 1 spoon for 3 people – how does that work? Every metal item, stainless steel or otherwise was covered in rust. Chairs for only 2 people, for a 3 person Cassa. The shower was cold water only.
Much of the walls are made of flyscreen, that fits to the building poorly. Result (in September) was a very draftee house, full of mosquitoes. Remember that single bed, its in a corner with flyscreen’s on 2 sides no curtains – yuck !
We saw no evidence of their being a Chef, a maintenance man (the place needs an army of maintenance men), or a manager. The cheery Security Guard who never seemed to leave was the highlight of Tofo Earth Lodge.
If you work in Health & Safety, keep away this place will frighten you.
