Thank you for your review. This is a village pub/hotel not a city centre drinking establishment. Customers are usually few and far between late on a Monday evening. For this reason the bars close at 11pm on a Monday for all except residents who invariably have gone to bed by then anyway. Similarly ladies are not rostered on their own after 11pm which is why there was the staff changeover. There was a noticeable notice regarding the early closing in the bar to which the review relates, namely the public bar. It was well after 11pm when he asked for the Credit Card bill to be settled. He was polite, waiting patiently and doing his job as instructed. I do apologise for the early closing on this night, but I do suggest that if you had said you wished to stay longer he would have been happy to oblige.

I tappeti e

The hotel is old and worn. But that is how people expect it to be. It was built in the 15th Century and many of its historic features remain. It is difficult to maintain. People come here to enjoy the village, the Dales, our jolly good wholesome food and drink and the happy friendly atmosphere of an evening in a “ye olde worlde” pub. These people didn’t. They just needed somewhere to sleep after they had been to a wedding at the “posh pad” down the road where a room costs between £180 and £405 and the food and drink are considerable. In life you get what you pay for. They paid £80. All they saw and experienced was a quick pint before they walked off down the road, the corridors and their room when they returned undoubtably well fed and watered at one in the morning and their breakfast in a lovely old fashioned restaurant in a bleary eyed, tired and hungover state. I say tired because when they came back they joined forces with friends staying in another room to sing, shout and argue for several hours waking other residents up. After they left the housekeeping staff found:- 1.The door handle had been ripped off. 2.The shower door handle had had a similar experience. 3.The bedding was in such a state that it went in the dustbin. There were empty alcohol bottles. The shower did work but it won’t if you don’t pull the electric cord. The T.V. size relates to the size of the room. It would surely be overbearing if too large. There is no hole in the floor. There is is a small area of subsidence in old floorboards under the carpet. You have to stand specifically on it to notice it. The room was painted last winter. The sink was cracked by the previous residents. It was repaired whilst waiting for a new fitting. It’s on the side and cosmetic. These things happen. And as for breakfast. Criticism of our “Full Yorkshire” - that is rare. The sausages are made by the local butcher across the green. The meat comes from the abattoir just up the road. “Greasy dirty menus” - there would have been just one on their table in a delightful restaurant overlooking the village green. Greasy - really difficult to imagine. Throughout their stay and that of their friends, and in particular when they all checked out, there was not one word of criticism or complaint. No request to change rooms not that they would have been able to as this small country hotel was full. Everybody has different taste and I do think that it is important that people consider this before they book. There are character less but modern purpose built hotels similar to what chains provide, there are delightful country houses but these are expensive, and then there are old fashioned old hotels like The Rose and Crown which creak and whose floors slope, but invite dogs and dirty boots and give great value and provide fun and memories. These people wanted the first one but come to The Rose and Crown because it was conveniently close to the wedding venue and low cost. That’s the reason that they would not wish to stay again. Fine, that is their choice. We will not miss them. Happy days and thank you for your time.
