Beyond the beautiful art pieces that are displayed here at the Tanah Mayan Art Museum, the Garcia sisters offer a plethora of information and share the Mayan herbalism & traditions passed down from generations. I worked directly with Maria when I visited. My two day visit with her included and herbal walk & traditional Maya healing ceremonies she performed with me along with a lunch during my day trip. It was a memorable experience and the knowledge I gained was priceless.

The gift shop itself is charming with local art both decorate, wearable, and timeless from jewelry pieces, to artwork to display, to copal and other ceremonial and handmade items. I am looking forward to my return...the small town of San Antonio is quaint too.

The Garcia sisters are responsible for the revitalization of the art of slate carving. They are also natural healers. We had a wonderful time with Maria in Feb. 2014. She told us about slate art, her Yucatec Mayan people and village of San Antonio, Elijio Panti National Park, and more.

Her sister, Aurora Garcia-Saqui, is also a slate carver artist and healer. She has a shop, restaurant and cabins in Maya Centre, which is just outside of the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Preserve.

The Garcia Sisters Museum and shop is perfectly located, and is a great stop for gifts, if you're going to MPR. They have tons of hand made art. They are pretty famous in Cayo for their art. From slate carvings, which they do very well, to jewelry, thay have it. You'll surely find something for everyone.

The Garcia Sisters are slate carvers and healers. Their little shop in San Antonio, Belize contains many beautiful slate carvings. They also sell herbal ointments. We visited, bought some nice slate and a great herbal cookbook. They even sold rubber balls where the natural rubber was collected in the "old way" and made into a ball similar to the way the ancient Maya would have dont it. Defintiely worth a stop.

The Garcia sisters welcome you to their village to experience the gifts of their homeland and ancient traditions. It is a place where planting and harvesting are sacred.

When Maria Garcia greeted me she was proud to show off the family's rediscovery of slate carvings. The sisters are all accomplished Yucatan Mayan artists and this ancient art form rediscovery has been celebrated throughout the region and country. Maria gave me a detailed tour through the very petite art museum where I began to develop a sense of timelessness while learning about the past. The center has hand crafted jewelry, masks and sculptures which you have the opportunity to take part of the Mayan culture home with you.

Located in the small village of San Antonio and between the mountains and the town of San Ignacio, you should not miss this cultural experience. I took the local Tzib Bus Service which has regular frequency from San Ignacio (75 cents).
