The current Uji Bridge was built in 1996, but the first Uji Bridge is said to be the oldest bridge in Japan at 646 years old. If you cross the bridge without being careful, it looks like a four-lane road bridge with a normal double-sided walkway, but the railings are made of cypress with bronze giboshi. You wouldn't notice it just by crossing, but it was a very historical looking bridge.

This is a famous bridge and a must-see in any visit to Uji..
It is also the first major landmark when one as you exit Keihan Uji Station. It was a Saturday noon time when we reached here after our visit to Byodoin Temple 平等院. Uji River ran along the center of city with many teahouses and cafés lining the banks on either sides. The Bridge is at junction of main roads and hence always crowded with both locals & tourists, scattered in the shopping Oharai-machi looking for souvenirs, snacks, or queuing in front of the famous sweets shop.
There is a sign by the road declaring it to be one of the oldest bridges in Japan. It has been destroyed and rebuilt many times throughout the years and the current bridge was completed back in 1996 and features bronze ornamental caps along its balustrade, with the attempt that the design will harmonize well with the surrounding landscape. There are also several of Uji's many Tale of Genji monuments placed at different locations.
The banks of the Uji River are a perfect place to enjoy a picnic in the shade of the trees but in July summer we only saw a few..
We walked along the bridge for a short distance to have a wider view of the surrounding and the river itself! To feel the breeze and hear the rushing water of Uji is really refreshing.. just that the summer heat took much jog that we did not stay too long at the site.
We came using of JR Pass to the Temple and after the visit return using the Keihan line instead to Kyoto sta.
At certain junction it reminds me of Kyoto Arashiyama bridge. Both elegant and longstanding...

Uji Bridge spans the Uji River, which flows between two World Heritage sites.
The current bridge was rebuilt in March 1996.
It has a traditional shape with cypress balustrades and bronze spires.
Also, the beautiful statue of Murasaki Shikibu can be seen nearby.

Currently, Uji Bridge is a road that is also used by vehicles, but the balustrade (a fence to prevent people from falling off the bridge) is made of wooden cypress balustrades with giboshu (ornamental jewel-shaped decorations), so you can still enjoy the view. The most distinctive feature of this bridge is the San-no-ma, a section that juts out upstream from the third bay of the Uji Bridge. It is said that in the past, Hashihime, the guardian deity of the bridge, was enshrined here, and the Famous Water Drawing Ceremony (a ceremony of gratitude to the three benefactors of Uji tea, Eisai Zenji, Myoe Shonin, and Sen no Rikyu) is held every year on the first Sunday of October, and this Famous Water Drawing Ceremony is one of the cultural properties that make up Japan Heritage (A Walk Through the History of 800 Years of Japanese Tea). If you are interested in the history of Uji Bridge, why not take a look at the Uji Bridge Monument (a Nationally Important Cultural Property) in the grounds of Tachibana Tera Shoin Temple (the monument states that Uji Bridge was built in the 2nd year of the Taika era (646) by the monk Doto, but it can only be visited from March 1st to May 31st and September 1st to November 30th). In addition, Hashihime, who is said to have been enshrined in San-no-Ma long ago, is now enshrined at Hashihime Shrine along Agata Street, the approach to Byodo-in Temple. If you have time, why not take a tour of the history of Uji Bridge?

It was my first visit on a Sunday afternoon in October.
There were many tourists from overseas, and we lined up to take photos in front of the statue of Murasaki Shikibu.
Wild cormorants also flew over the Uji River, which made me feel relaxed.
There is a famous 100% buckwheat soba restaurant nearby, and since it was a holiday, I queued for 60 minutes, but I was able to eat at lunchtime without any problems.
