Had a wonderful walk along the promenade leading up to the pier. Very peaceful, beautiful skies, occasional jogger and dog walker. The pier is beautiful as well with a couple of skaters practicing their skating - the non destructive kind. Not sure why so many mooring points are being placed together.
Understand that the pie has a lot of history behind it and was originally linked to the railway for ease of unloading. It also serves as a departure and arrival point for soldiers during the World Wars.

This derelict pier, formerly a vital link to the outside world, is still interesting, Changes in maritime technology meant that Princes Pier was no longer needed and it became vandalised, and eventually derelict. It's a sad end to this pier, that was such an important cog in Australia's international commerce.

Great open spaces here right next to the beach. Nothing much to do apart from just soaking in the breeze and vastness of the waters. Great for a jog or walk to destress.

The original pier was 580 meters long and built between 1912 and 1915 and was used from 1915 until 1969 as a port for arriving immigrants. With containerization it was no longer used and as the timber declined and with a few fires it fell into disrepair. The the first 198 meters has been restored and the old piles remain. It was originally called The New Railway Pier (imaginative) and was changed to Princes Pier after the visit of the Prince of Wales (Edward VIII) in 1920.This is a good place to walk on a nice day with good views back to Station Pier and the container docks to the west.

This pier runs parallel to Station Pier where the Spirit of Tasmania docks as well as cruise ships. The pier had a facelift in recent times, but currently looks a little sad. There is no kiosk for travellers or locals, but there is on street parking nearby and you can get there with tram #109.
The clever entry sculpture play tricks on the eyes - remember to look at the ground and strand front on after reading 'Princes'. It has a flow on effect. It was built between 1912 and 1915 and was where many Australians went off to war from and many arrived here from other countries to start a new life. There are a few historical markers with information on them for you to read as you enter and further back too.
Currently there is nothing much happening at the jetty apart from locals fishing and catching very little unless they were on a kayak between the posts!
This is popular place for locals to walk and exercise at as there are great waling and bike trails plus New Beach to use.
But it is a sort after place for all levels of photographers to hone their craft, especially at sunset. I think this pier lends itself well to visiting any time of day, especially cloudy ones.

We went there as requested by my daughter who loves photography. We had our dinner and arrived there by 7 pm, she wanted to take sun set, it was beautiful there with coastal walk. Local people enjoyed jogging or riding on bike, very pleasant. Keeping walking out to the pier, you will find the old supporting log remaining there became a sculpture point. Taking photos, enjoy the walk and good family time together.

It was cold & drizzling when I was there. Totally worth dropping by if you are around St Kilda for a nice shot.

Re "This is the worst pier ever", you might confirm if you are reviewing Princes Pier of the adjacent Station Pier as there are no large ships docking at this location. Opened in 2011 (from its closure in 1990's) is is only an upgraded less than 200m part of the of the original 560m New Railway Pier
