Thattekad Bird Sanctuary is a must-visit for nature lovers and bird enthusiasts. Nestled along the banks of the Periyar River, the sanctuary offers a serene environment with a variety of bird species to spot. For the best bird sighting experience, it's recommended to arrive before 7:30 in the morning.
The mini park around the river includes a butterfly park and a kids' play area, which are part of a namesake mini zoo that doesn't have many animals. There is also an option for a forest trek, boat ride and for those who want to truly immerse themselves in the environment, a forest stay can be booked in advance.
Note that entry to the sanctuary is with a fee, but it's well worth the experience. The combination of rich biodiversity, peaceful river views, and well-maintained surroundings makes Thattekad a perfect escape for a day immersed in nature.

Nice place.
Rejeev Thattekad is a renowned bird watcher, naturalist, tourist guide, and fishing guide. He has worked at the Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary in Thattekad for 24 years. As a close disciple of the famous birdwatcher Dr. Salim Ali, Rejeev Thattekad has also learned from ornithologist Dr. Sugathan. Both Thattekad and Sugathan continued as disciples from 2002 to 2024.
The Dr Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, where Rejeev Thattekad works, is located about half a kilometre from his home. In addition to his work at the sanctuary, he also works independently on these tasks. The best time for bird watching and other activities is typically from September to March.

I stayed at Jewel Homes which is only 10 - 15 minutes walk away from the ticket office. Once you have a ticket you can then walk along the Salim Ali Trail where you will see some interesting birds. However for the best experience you will need to engage a guide who will take you to other more interesting areas within the forest. There are some hides open in the afternoons for photographers so ask about how to get to them. .

We had taken a local guide to go birding the day before outside the sanctuary and were astounded by the rich diversity. This morning we opted for the Baza trail inside the sanctuary, which was capably hosted. Didn't see much, but thats birding, though the teak forests were pleasant enough. That said, the facilities are old, broken or simply no longer there: disappointing.

The bird sanctuary is located in the forest. Roads to the sanctuary are fairly decent. The entry fee was waived today as for 5 days in October it is advertised as free on a sign at the entrance which is in Malayalam with no translation in any other language so no one else can read it. There is a parking fee and a camera fee if you wish to use a camera which totalled to Rs 70. The entry fee will allow you entry to the Salim Ali trail only. Any other trail is Rs 500 extra on top of the entry fee. A list of trails is available on a leaflet at the ticket counter. There is a shop selling T-shirts, hats etc at the ticket counter. The gates/ticket counter/shop opens at 7 am. There is a small corner tea shop which sells good hot tea, coffee, water, biscuits and nibbles. Behind the ticket counter there are a few cages with a peacock, a monkey, a snake (which happened to be a king cobra ) and a number of poorly kept glass fish tanks. There are a few benches close to the river and this is the place to be to see the kingfishers that fly back and forth to the perches in the water and across the river. The benches are in the shade and lots of different fish can be seen in the water too as closer to the shore the water is clear. No wonder the kingfishers want to fish here. The Salim Ali trail is about 100 meters away from the ticket counter on the opposite side of the road. A warden checks the ticket and asks you to write your name and contact details in a book. The trail itself is circular and good. We saw lots of birds. The trail is mostly under the canopy and in the shade. We also came across elephant poo. The warden did tell us elephants were sighted on the paths a couple of days ago. One side of the path has an electric fence. We had a very good day birdwatching. If you are a foreigner and not interested in birdwatching it will be an expensive day out.

We visited thattekad bird sanctuary recently and it was a nice experience. Every body may not find this place interesting because of some reasons. Visiting time is most important amount them as one can find birds mainly in the morning and evening. Also day time temperatures are quite high.
Another factor is your knowledge of bird habits and bird calls which makes birding trips easy. If you are interested in birding, try to get a professional bird guide, which is not easy to find.
We contacted through a website named thattekad trails.com and their service was affordable and excellent as they provide private tours and not in large groups. I will leave their number here 8547680759.

Great place for bird watching - some that are specific to south India and the Malabar region. Oct-Feb is best time . But we had unseasonal thundershowers in Oct. So I would say -play safe . Nov-Feb should be little risk. beware of the Leeches. Take appropriate steps to avoid blood loss:) Beautiful Landscape too. heavenly!!!

This place is a must visit location for birding enthusiasts and nature lovers, because of the wide variety of birds and habitats found in a relatively small area. But this place may not seem attractive to all visitors because of the lack of much activities or attractions, other than boating. Also visiting time of the day is very important as mid day will be hot and humid with very less birds and wildlife activity compared to early mornings and afternoons. For birders it is important to reach around 7:00 am and avail the service of an experienced birding guide to get the most out of your trip. Entry tickets can be purchased on site from the ticket counter but for good guides you have to pre book one. I found a website named thattekad trails who provides online booking for guide service, which was very convenient and professional. During the rainy wet season there are lot of leaches in the trails.

Not a great spot to visit for the time being. It is an off season now. Need to add more attractions in the place. Otherwise this will become a hub for the bird watching enthusiasts only!

What's the nearest place to Thattekad to have a good chance of seeing Nilgiri Langur and Lion-tailed macaque.
Thanks

My advise would be find a local guide at Thatattekad and ask them. Their knowledge is amazing and they track the birds on a daily basis. You don't have to pay them but I would encourage you to do so m, as their knowledge is second to none and they deserve every penny for the love they have of their local wildlife. Happy spotting!
