Great off the beaten path sightseeing

A great little side trip on our way from Auckland to Rotorua. Great experience and easy hike. Very empty in afternoon hours with just a few other people visiting. Bridge does not swing much, but crossing the river at that height is amazing. Tip: Google maps directions were wrong and got us to the area of the bridge, but not to the carpark. To get to the carpark you need to go through the village.

Really cool swing bridge in the middle of nowhere over a gushing river!
It’s a really easy walk down a slight hill to the bridge, which takes about 5 or so minutes to walk across.
Very picturesque spot!
You can turn right when you cross the bridge and so an easy loop back to the car park to make it a bit of a longer journey.

Well worth a visit!

152m suspension bridge

My hosts at 5 Acres B&B in Tokoroa suggested coming here while I was in the area. It is worth visiting to see and cross the the 152-metre (499 ft) suspension bridge which is surrounded by a rainforested gorge above the Waikato River. The bridge was built in the mid-1920s to allow workers from the village of Arapuni to cross the River and access the hydro power station construction site. When you cross the bridge you can walk up towards the power station but cannot enter (the site is fenced off). The views out over the river and gorge are spectacular (and free!) though you are up quite high (54m) and those with vertigo or who are scared of heights may find it confronting (especially given the bridge moves at bit with the weight of people crossing). It was quiet when I came and I had the bridge to myself but I imagine it would be less immersive with multiple people on at once making it rock about. The bridge is easy to get to from Arapuni town, just follow the signs or use Google Maps. The town itself is tiny and there was not much else there that I noticed when visiting other than a cute little main street.

Well populated with a solid concrete path to walk down to the bridge. Once you get there what a view with the sound of the running water far below. Make sure to walk the bridge and take in the view. Awesome.

An interesting place with an interesting war time history - Read some of the information boards.
An amazing piece of hidden engineering that more people should detour to see when travelling up & down SH1. Take a detour and sketch your legs for some great views & fresh air

Good view. You can imagine as if you would be doing bungee jumping. The brush pot trees are like green ripples over the canopy under the bridge.

A great find

I have lived in Wellington for over 40 years and driven Highway 1 along the Waikato River many times and never knew this bridge existed. The bridge itself is interesting but best of all provides great views of the Waikato and one of New Zealand’s oldest hydro generation plants (commissioned in 1929). Well worth a stop and a walk.

An interesting stroll

Take in the green waters of the great Waikato being squeezed through turbines of the historic Arapuni dam. The bridge doesn’t swing but moves slightly in suspension. A pleasant stroll with parking in the shade on a hot summer’s day
