Great wee place to bring a picnic or your chips and have a small walk around. Not a lot to see and a bit of a walk to get up to the castle but really enjoy it every time I go.

Fabulous drive through the countryside to park by the local church and then walk the 0.5 miles to the castle.
Grand castle in its time(dating from the 1300's), the castle has a great defensive position surrounded by amazing views.
Originally home to the Crichton family, later to become the residence of the earls of Bothwell(the 4th Earl being the third husband of Mary Queen of Scots).
Free to enter as we had our Historic Scotland pass, we could explore on foot most places but careful, some slippery surfaces.
Interesting Italian facade, diamond studded, elevated views and an all round very interesting place to visit.
Helpful member of staff on duty and very good booklet to accompany for a small cost.

First time visit, most impressed, a product of serious wealth of it's time, truly a countrypile. A great place to take children.

I never knew there was a castle located here, it is hidden away and when you reach it the view of the valley as it drops away to the river ( hidden by trees) below and the 360 panorama of all greenery around you feel in the middle of the country and miles from civilisation - so peaceful and great to just absorb the scenery - either from within the castle when looking out the windows on the levels you are allowed to access - or from outside if you walk over to where the stables are situated ( although don't walk to far beyond them as it appears to be a drop - a previous quarry apparently where they got the red stone from it seems -now covered in greenery- so best not to let any kids run around unsupervised )
The castle itself is without roof but you can still go up some staircases or down some steps to basement areas, so there is a variety of rooms that can be looked at, although some imagination is required to put together where the vaulted roof would have been or what it would have looked like.
A lot of the flooring was uneven and you would have to take more care when it's been raining as I imagine likelihood of slipping on stair areas - my friend ( younger individual ) who uses a stick managed to climb up and down some of the large steps and dividing areas ( but I would not expect my mother who uses a stick to manage )

- there is also a walk in from the car park so this has to be considered if there is mobility issues.

There are bars ( or clear Perspex ) on the low open window frames in the upper areas, but I would still keep a close hand on any young children inclined to climb.

If you can visit on a dry day all the better, but worth a visit certainly if you are in the area - if you where to take your time looking round and taking photos and reading the plaques, it still wouldn't take you much more than a couple of hours, so not an all day activity but an interesting place to visit I have to say and glad I went.

Otroligt vackert slott! Vi blev väldigt överraskade över att det inte var så ”skotsk”, utan mer italiensk renässans? Men det var väldigt spännande och är väl värt ett besök!

This was an interesting place, and how English Heritage card gave us free access. The inner wall is a unique feature, the views are picturesque, and the over all experience was very good. It is not a must do to visit here, but if in the area its certainly worth a visit.

I was visiting the Pathead area and made a trip to see this castle.
I found it to be a very interesting place to see and was pleased I came. I had been hereas a child but to see the place again as an adult and understand more about the history I was very pleased.
This is a must see for anyone visiting the area.

Before reaching the castle make sure you visit the church. A bit of a walk for some, from car park to castle but well worth the walk. But be prepared for the lack of facilities - no toilets, no cafe. Dogs welcome.
