Rubbish place. Not worth a visit. You can find similar and better things on MG Road in Gangtok. Save your effort.

This is a Government training centre for handloom and handicrafts and there is an Emporium to sell these. This was our 1st sight for the day and there was hardly any one attending to the cuatomers and visitors in the huge Emporium. I big disappointment.
Then there are the various training halls for a variety of handicraft skills where some young boys and girls were supposed to be training. In some of the halls, teachers were chit chatting. Corridors and surroundings were unkempt and dirty. Perhaps not been cleaned for days. And this is supposed to be a show piece of the local Government for the tourists. Sad state of affairs.

Based on the photographs rather than the address (which I'm sure is wrong), this listing appears to be for the Directorate of Handicrafts and Handloom in Gangtok. It's a sprawling site with demonstrations of a wide range of traditional handicrafts and quite a bit shop selling things that you'll struggle to take home if you're a foreigner.
I find such places interesting but the whole 'human zoo' aspect of watching trainee craftsmen and women at work is a bit awkward.
We bought a crazy cuddly red panda in traditional dress and a few small wood carvings. We also arrived before the place opened and spent half an hour watching the ladies in the cafe making momos.

1) This is Govt emporium so accept the apathy you will experience at such institutions, but the infrastructure created for artisans and they at work can be seen by us.
2) The handicraft items are varied like paper, paper mache, wooden, brass, woollen, leather etc. and the work is very good.
3) Especially the woollen shawls were beautiful and almost out of stock. We managed to buy one which is beautifully made at very reasonable price. The advantage of Govt institution here is quality is assured.
4) Many of other items were out of stock but small Leather and Cloth Purses were available, very attractive and at reasonable prices. And yes, they accept credit cards.
5) Tip - Visit if you have time and you can get a beautiful item if you are lucky.

After seeing disappointing waterfalls and crowded view points all around the place, I was really looking forward to visit this place. I love art and handicraft in general, and I was very excited about buying souvenirs there as we had found nothing but plastic dolls and key-chains so far... And this place was a huge disappointment.
There was one messy room that they dare call a museum, there are few interesting pieces (I loved the mandala drawings depicting the method to draw them for example), but a guy was pursuing us and was not really providing amazing comments (I try to avoid them usually as they insist for tips without providing interesting details). There are few rooms in which we are supposed to see the students and artists work, but it felt awkward to visit... And the shop was the worst. First there was not much, and then it looked kind of dirty and badly organized... I thought there would be some painted greeting cards or letter papers as I have always found beautiful ones everywhere in India, that much was not even there.
Skip this place unless they reorganize and renew the whole place!!!

Being keen on handicrafts and artisans I was looking forward to visiting this place. It was raining hard yet I visited the place only to be sadly disappointed. Located in an uninspiring setting the place disappoints when one sees stuffed kitsch toys being made and promoted with a few handful of craftsmen working on the traditional skills. Innovation with traditional skills would have been interesting with the emporium being located in a traditional Sikkim house!

The Handicraft Emporium at Gangtok has a wide ranging displays. The handloom from different states, soft toys, local produces ranging from pickles to tea, decorative items, dresses, interiors and many other interesting items are awaiting you. I bought the traditional bamboo shoot pickles of North East India. The Handicraft emporium was fun trip.
