My first walk up the hill to the castle wearing jeans in August was a bit warm, to put it mildly. On subsequent trips I wore shorts and had a much time.
The castle grounds provides an excellent view of the city below and there is a small cafe where you can buy lunch and refreshments with outdoor seating.
There is a small entrance fee to enter the castle proper, about $4.00 US.
Once inside you are free to explore from top to bottom. The castle is centuries old and it obvious it has been under reconstruction various times during it's history.
Adults are likely to appreciate the beautiful views and historical information, while children will certainly enjoy exploring all of the nooks and crannies.

Cost 2€ for entrance, the views are great! It’s a good place to bring family members visiting in the KMCC area. For Castle ruins, it’s still interesting to see how it would’ve looked back then versus how it looks now. They also have a restaurant located next to the castle and lots of hiking paths around.

I grew up visiting this particular castle frequently when we were stationed at Ramstein. I visited as an adult with my family & my son was absolutely fascinated with the ruins. It quickly became his favourite castle, as it is mine. It's fun to wander the ruins and imagine how it used to be. The views are breathtaking. It's definitely worth the visit. This castle holds a lot of childhood memories for me & I am thankful I could share that with my family. It will always be my favourite, and I've visited many others.

Nanstein castle was erected around 1162 by order of emperor Frederic Barbarossa.
In 1518 the stronghold was acquired and adapted to firearms by Franz von Sickingen. In 1523 the new defences were put to the test by the largest artillery deployment to date. After a short siege the walls were breached and the landlord was mortally wounded by falling rubble.
From 1543 onward the offspring of Frans von Sickingen transformed Nanstein castle into a luxurious renaissance palace. The edifice sustained severe damage from several war events in the second half of the seventeenth century.
Visitors can discover Nanstein castle with the help of an audioguide (english version available) and an excellent reconstruction film. There are neither information panels nor a brochure.
The layout of the medieval stronghold remains obscure. None of the buildings atop castle rock have been preserved.
The massive artillery tower, the courtyard of the renaissance palace and its gun terrace and star shaped bastion can still be identified. Part of the defences facing the town of Landstuhl have disappeared and the entrance facade has been gutted beyond recognition. No living quarters have been preserved.
In conclusion :
Sadly Nanstein castle fell short of our expectations. Worth a short stop if you are in the area but nothing to go out of your way for.
Hint for the management :
Place information panels with reconstruction drawings to improve the orientation of visitors.

We walked up from Landstuhl below: the “road” to get up is a very steep, curvy, narrow alleyway. The walk up wasn’t too horrible; just not ideal since it’s so steep. It was a pretty walk. We walked up the road instead of taking the trail.
The inside of the castle was closed, so we just walked around the outside. The views of Landstuhl below were very nice.

There were no special events going on, but it was still a good visit for us. They have a family entrance deal for € 8. The view is impressive. The restaurant is reasonably priced and has really good food. If you like the rolled penny souvenirs, there is one there that requires € 1 coin and 5 € cent coin.

Not much to see. Also, the restaurant was pretty standard fair with the typical slow and anemic service that you will find in Germany. Out of a table of 5 the waitress forgot my dish and needed a reminder after my patience ran out.

Traurig!

As mentioned, Cardiac Hill goes toward the hospital. That's the opposite direction from the castle. Alten Markt or Martin-Butzer Platz (about a block North) will work for a jump-off point. Look for signs to the paths.
