We went to Welland Canal to see the big ships, and the whole thing was empty. We had no idea a strike was impending. We were still able to get good views of the locks, and in another spot was saw stone/concrete remains of the original canal. We went when the viewer center hours stated it was open, but it was closed.

Welland Canal Lock 7 was on our list of places to see, as they have a live webcam on YouTube, which sparked my attention and brought my desire to come here, to see it up close and personal. The Viewing Center itself is a small welcome center, with an outdoor deck that allows visitors a nice view of the lock, directly across the road. We arrived just in time to witness a ship in the lock, which I had only seen in videos or on TV.
One of the roads to get here takes a visitor along Hwy 58, which enters a tunnel that allows cars to go UNDER the canal, beneath approximately 9 million gallons of the Welland Canal. I may be wrong on the number, but it is amazing, nonetheless.
It was a nice visit on our way through town and I will definitely visit again.

Stopped here incidentially, after visiting lock 3 and wanting to see a ship in the canal. Noah, in the information centre was very helpful. Great view and we were able to watch a ship drop 16 metres (and change crew at the same time).
Kudos to the attraction for being the first attraction that I've been to ANYWHERE that had an adult change table. I hadn't considered the needs of people who might use it, when travelling, until I saw it today and thought that it should be recognized for being inclusive.

Lock 7 is part of the Welland Canal, itself part of the St Lawrence Seaway system. A nearby historic marker details four versions of the Welland Canal were built from 1824 to 1932, each one larger than its predecessor, each one following new routing, built to bypass the wonder of Niagara Falls. Shipping canals are engineering marvels, no feature more interesting than a lock to change elevation. From the Lock 7 Information Centre or right beside the canal fencing, there is no better location to appreciate the Welland Canal. As a sign says at the Centre 'Where ships climb the mountain' [okay, maybe just the Niagara Escarpment]. While the Centre provides information, there is nothing better than seeing a ship in transit. You can ascertain expected times at the various locks via a website, hopefully being able to time your visit accordingly. I was lucky to have found the 'Ojibway' was heading 'up' or inland at roughly 1500 hours on Sept 1st. Standing so far below, the ship was daunting in size. It took some 8 to 9 minutes to pass by, the blast of its horn almost enough to wake the dead. On the grounds of the Centre is Nanuk, a polar bear statue. Running between the Centre and the Canal is the Welland Canals Trail, good for biking, walking [with or without a dog] and skateboarding. The site itself has eight parking spaces in total.

Excellent spot to view the ships other than Lock 3 viewing platform.About as close as you get to the ships here and a clear view.

This lock has an interesting little museum to go through while waiting for a ship to arrive and use the lock. The young lady in the museum was able to tell us what time a ship would be going through this particular lock. We were able to see one ship get raised and as soon as it cleared another ship entered and was lowered.

Here you can get breathtaking views of the massive ships as they move through and up the locks in the Welland Canal. The museum has interesting information about the history of the canal and the town of Throrold. Worth a stop!

So glad we stopped here. Picnic tables and several benches available to watch the big ships pass threw the locks and some are in the shade.. Wonderful spot. Then there is the museum with so many interesting items. The staff is full of information and can answer any question. They know the schedule of the ships to plan your time. The restroom is very clean. The whole place is free.

As you travel along the Welland Canal Bank Road there are a few locations where you can stop and watch a boat as it either raises or lowers in the lock. This location is not bad at all.

Not much specifically for kids. There is a small museum and the staff will assist but basically just watch the ships go by. Make sure you go online and look up to see what the ship traffic will be on the day you plan to go or else you might end up just looking at water. Google "ship traffic passing through Welland Canal" will lead you to the correct link.

Having a super long drive i want to make sure there will be boats. We are thinking march break isthere a good time in the day to see the locks in use.
