Not as spectacular as some of the larger mansions but still amazing in its own right. Furnishings reflect the owner which I enjoy seeing.

The house is cluttered with furniture and tacky Knick-knacks collected by an egotistical owner who deeded the property to display what she felt the public should see i.e. references to relatives of centuries past as well as her amateurish hobby projects.

I was impressed with this house in June 2012 when I last reviewed it and after today's visit am even more so. Unlike some the other reviewers, I like that the house reflects the changes that have been made through the years. I enjoyed all of Alletta Morris McBain's symmetry and after the first room, I kept looking for it in each room. She had a lot of lovely matching "knickknacks" . She had a lot of furniture in each room, but I thought it was tastefully and creatively arranged. It was a home that looked as if he had been lived in. I loved all of the rooms, but the sunroom was my favorite with two sides of totally glass windows.
The house is open more than it used to be. This year it closes mid-October. Until then there are tours at 10;30, 12:30, 2:30, and 4:30 every day. Membership is now $90.00 for a couple and $105.00 for a family (two adults and all children 6-17.)

Chepstow es una ciudad preciosa cuya principal atracción es su bello castillo. Vale la pena llegar hasta ahí, recorrer el río a orillas del cual está construída y recorrer el Valle del río Wye.La ciudad amerita un día completo pero se puede llegar a la aldea de Tinter, muy cerca, a pie o en micro.

Very interesting tour and a great guide. It's nice to see a mansion that was not the opulence of the gilded age houses. Very homey feel-my wife loved it.

One of my favorite mansions of the Preservation Society is Chepstow. Full of beautiful historic furnishings aet in a livable setting. Philip was our tour guide. He was excellent. The grounds are beautiful. It feels like a real home . I love this place.

Still worth going. It depends on what you like. For example, I go to the breakers, Marble House, Elms and Rosecliff every time I'm in Newport. I've been to Kingscote, Isaac Belle and Belcourt fewer times than those because they are not as spectacular, yet still interesting. Chepstow is interesting because of the family history. It was passed down and stayed in one family until it was given to the Preservation Society in 1996, I think. The house is basically original and there are other pieces of furniture and antiques from the family's other properties in Newport and New York City. It was a guided tour, and our guide was EXCELLENT. It is located just off Bellevue. It has an elevator but our guide said she was not aware if it was functioning. Free, off-street parking. I suggest buying a Preservation Society membership if you plan on seeing a number of their properties. Fully tax deductible, and no lines and 10% off in the gift shops!

We had a personal guide, Marry, who was wonderful. It is nice to have a personal guide these days since so many are now the audio guide. This home seems a more lived in and “regular family home” with beautiful objects belonging to a very wealthy family. Something different nice to see as well as the mansions of Newport.

Chepstow is my favorite of the smaller, lesser-known "mansions" run by the Newport Preservation Society. The Italianate style and the lighter decor of the rooms make it a bit more "breathable" than some of the other homes, even though it is crowded with treasures, as seems to be the Victorian way. The fact that it was still occupied by family until the nineties is evident in the ambience of the place. It feels like you have come to pay a call on dear old rich eccentric Aunt Martha who has just stepped out. Having the advantage of a collection of furniture and artifacts that is mostly original to the family makes it so much more special. The landscaping and gorgeous old trees are lovely. Our tour was conducted by a real live person (always better than the audio tour guides, in my opinion) who was enthusiastic and informative. If you have time for only one of the more petite palaces then my vote would be for Chepstow.

Our tour guide was more interested in telling us about the artwork on the walls and the artists who painted them, than telling us about the house and its owners. There was so much furniture crammed into the rooms and overabundance of artwork on the walls you couldn't appreciate what is a beautiful home (not mansion) it is.
