I spent 9 days in Galapagos, but my one night in Mindo was a vacation highlight! I had the best time birdwatching and experiencing local culture. I stayed for one night and booked a half day tour for the following morning. I also requested pick up and drop off from the airport (two hour drive). Everything was smooth and easy.
I have never seen so many birds in my life! The hummingbirds and Cock of the Rock were incredible. So many different colors and varieties. The guides were very knowledgeable. They shared their binoculars with us and helped us take nice bird photos.
The meals they cooked were amazing too! I was there for dinner and breakfast. I had the best soup of my life, and they catered to my vegetarian diet.
I wish I had time for a full day tour at least. A half day tour left me wanting more. The accommodation was simple, but sufficient! They provided lots of free drinkable water too.
I wish I spoke Spanish so I could communicate more with my guides, but I was able to get by with English. They were just such kind people I would have liked speaking their language and getting to know them better.

What an amazing morning we had! Male Cocks-of-the-Rock lekking at dawn, then searching in the forest for antpittas, surrounded by a throng of other colourful species and finally a most delicious breakfast in a very pleasant restaurant, with hummingbird feeders attracting plenty of customers!

Our guide had arranged for us to visit this amazing place. The brothers that guide this special place are so dedicated to the Antpittas, collecting worms before trying to call the birds. We saw 4 out of 5 of the Antpittas, only missing the Giant Antpitta.
We saw many other birds during our visit including a Dark Backed Wood- Quail.
Afterwards we had a late breakfast at the restaurant that they have now built, delicious 😋. The whole family are working hard to help preserve the area and take care of the birds. Good luck to them.
Definitely recommended.

Our birding guide, Marcelo Arias (best guide ever) took us here to see the Antipittas. They were able to call in 4 of the 5 antipittas that are there. The owners are amazing an trying to preserve the area for the birds. What a very special place!

The reserve is a special place, well-known for its antipittas. Angel and Rodrigo are trying to preserve the property as a bird refuge.

We visited here with a guide (Danny Jumbo) which I would suggest is required because the guides all knew where to go and what to do to see the best birds. The day was extremely enjoyable and we saw so many more unique birds than we even anticipated.

This family run resort caters mostly to day trippers but we stayed there for 2 nights. The staff was so sweet and though we came without a guide, they took us to all the birding sites along with the groups that come just for the morning. The lodge is away from the dining area but that was not an issue because we were driven back and forth by different family members. Rooms are small but comfortable. Food was good. There was hot water and wifi at the lodge. Bird feeders everywhere to keep you busy with the camera.

Angel Paz and his crew work hard to help visitors get close-up views and photos of Antpittas and other birds that are usually hidden in the underbrush. We saw Giant, Chestnut-crowned, and Yellow-breasted Antpittas. Although this refuge is known for its Antpittas, we also saw many other sought-after birds, including Andean Cock-of-the-Rock, Dark-backed Wood Quail, and a mother and juvenile Potoo. They also have feeders that attract a variety of hummingbirds, tanagers, and Toucan Barbets. No birding trip to Ecuador is complete without Paz de Las Aves Bird Refuge. People who have mobility issues should be aware that hiking in hilly terrain is required to see some, but not all the birds.

Like so many others, our group came to see the amazing birds of Paz de las Aves, where Angel and his brother created the practice of hand-feeding Antpittas - notoriously hard birds to see. We were not disappointed!
Our day began with observing Cock-of-the-rock, but was interrupted by several Dark-backed Wood-quail that Angel had coaxed out of the forest and onto the trail. We then proceeded to get stunningly good looks at the Antpittas he has "trained" to respond to his call. These are very shy forest birds not often seen.
By late morning it was time to take a break for coffee and empanadas in the lovely little cafe he has built. Although I'm a dedicated birder, I believe Paz de las Aves will appeal to anyone with an interest in nature. Don't miss it!

Hallo, wat wil je weten over deze attractie?
Hoe kunnen wij een vogel toer boeken? wij zijn 1,5 dag in Mindo
Scritta in data 1 aprile 2018
Succes

Is transportation available from mindo town for afternoon cock of the rock experience?
Scritta in data 7 aprile 2016
Just as Doug mentioned these birds are present and active early in the morning only. If you go at some other time you may see other interesting birds but probably not the cock-of-the-rocks. I suggest using the service of a bird guide from Mindo. They are well trained and know exactly where and when to go places.

Hola! Estamos viajando en noviembre y quisiéramos saber si podemos hacer la visita a este parque durante el día ya que ya tenemos reserva en Quito. Gracias!

Thanks for your review of Paz de las Aves Bird Refuge. Did you have your own car to get around?
Scritta in data 22 agosto 2015
I didn't rent a car in Ecuador, and would not have wanted to drive there. I hired a bird guide and driver, which worked well. The Cock of the Rock lek would have been a nightmare to find on my own at dawn, but the driver and guide knew where to go. Road conditions and signs, or lack thereof, can be a serious problem if you rent a car.

Since we will be staying in Quito and it is not likely we will get to Mindo super early, will we be able to see many birds in the middle of the day. What activities do you advise given that we will need to return to Quito in the late afternoon.

Hi!
The only real show you'd miss is the Cock-of-the-Rock display at dawn. Otherwise, the rest of the birds are around all day. If you had one of the local guides, they could help you find lots of wonderful birds, including the other stars - Antpittas and the Antthrush. The late morning breakfast was especially good - I recall it was around 10am. That was when they put the bananas in the trees to bring in the tanagers and Toucan Barbets! And the hummingbird feeders are always humming!
It would be a great day trip. I would contact them at Paz de Las Aves and see what you can arrange... If you started out early you might even be able to make "late breakfast"
