The Valentine is a good museum, worth the price of admission. That's the core of this review. I have been twice this year and both times were quite enjoyable. The museum has a lot to offer even online - their self-guided maps of sections of Richmond are very interesting and have sparked my wife & I to do more exploring around the city. The physical presence of the museum is essentially four exhibit spaces spread across two floors, plus a fascinating Lost Cause exhibit in the historic Edward Valentine sculpture studio in the back garden, and then the ca. 1812 Wickham House, historically furnished, next door. Parking is either free in their lot (which is kind of small and is set up for double parking) or validated in the parking garage of the nearby medical school.

I found half of the exhibits interesting. The story of Richmond's founding, the neighborhood histories, the smashed Jeff Davis statue & associated exhibit info (which is a very introspective and mature look at the event and the convoluted feelings around these Jim Crow statues), and the lower floor's display of how Richmond has grappled with its history from a preservation and celebration standpoint are all superb. I did feel that a variety of the primary artifacts, though, were not very impactful (such as an Ardent beer bottle - I can go buy one of those today...). I would have liked to see more primary artifacts from the local area. The magazine photography exhibit I did not find interesting, and the lower floor's photography series was neat for a quick perusal but not really worth the space it occupies. The basement access to the kitchen of the 1812 Wickham House is closed, has been for a while, and will apparently continue to be. It's neat to see the foundation, but closing it and using it for storage is a missed opportunity to give people a taste of the building's structure and generate interest in the Wickham House.

The Wickham House is accessible via guided tour, which is done on the hour, I think. It does not seem to be offered consistently, and its incumbent on the visitor to come back to the ticket desk to join a tour - there is no notification throughout the other exhibits of a tour starting. The house is beautiful, exquisitely restored and well-furnished, and absolutely a must-see. The tour of it is about half-an-hour and covers the main floor only (not the upstairs, or the aforementioned basement).

The Sculpture Studio in the back garden is my favorite element of the museum. The studio was relocated from Edward Valentine's property to the garden of the Wickham House, and is the same studio where E. Valentine designed such iconic Lost Cause imagery as Lee Recumbent and the Jeff Davis statue itself, among many, many others. So, the Lost Cause mythology has a strong origin story in the hands of this mistaken man. Originally, and until relatively recently, the studio's exhibit focused on how Valentine sculpted and was mocked up to show tools and his work. Now, it has been repurposed into a thoroughly thoughtful and informative exhibit on how the Lost Cause mythology was made to be so prevalent and invasive. The sculptures are still there, but behind a semi-transparent giant entire-wall screen that plays a two-part history of Confederate statues in Richmond on loop (with no audio) and highlights the appropriate sculptures in a very carefully designed illumination pattern as the program runs. Take a seat on a stool and watch the slides for about 10 minutes - it's incredible.

In summary, The Valentine is a worthwhile museum. It is not perfect, and has room for improvement, but offers a lot of very delicate Richmond history for the price (and they do discounts for educators, vets, etc.). This is probably not going to be a highlight visit for people without an interest in Richmond's history, and is really targeted towards locals. Every Richmonder should go. Tourists, though, may not be the right audience unless they are Civil War enthusiasts.

We enjoyed the displays at this little museum. The history of Richmond with various artifacts is explained from the beginning. Our guide gave us a wonderful tour of the mansion associated with the museum.

The now derelict Davis statue was fascinating, especially since it was created right there. Sophia was extremely helpful and friendly.

The museum is informative but all the exhibits are in cases, They require a lot of reading. There were no multi media presentations or more current museum techniques that I recall used here.
Overall, it was an average experience representing the “new” Richmond. Like the “new south,” it seems more focused on certain topics and more forgetful of others.
The courtyard was a nice, sunny feature for visitors.

I guess after seeing other things in town over a few days, this place was for me pretty forgetable.

The neighborhood next to MCV/VCU is very neat. Validated parking in the lot in back is a plus. The museum isn't large but is very interesting, showing many early Richmond artifacts. Lunch in the courtyard via the on-site cafe or street vendors is enjoyable.

Enjoyed our stop at this little museum in the heart of Richmond. Parking is a bit challenging because there is no dedicated lot. Figure 1-2 hours depending upon how much you care to see and read. They also included a tour of the adjacent historical home of a Richmond aristocrat.

Had somewhat interesting exhibits of Richmond's history. Best was on ladies dresses of 1930s. Nice little garden. Without the house and sculpture studio, not on our top 25 things to do.

Having toured almost all of the (many) historic homes in and around the Richmond area, we recently revisited The Valentine. The Wickham House, which is attached, has period decor and a number of pieces original to the home and family. Two floors are open and furnished. There is a small museum of items curated to represent the experience of all groups who have resided in Richmond, starting with indigenous Indians. A rotating exhibit space currently has information about the centennial of the 19th Amendment and Richmond women involved in the Women's Suffrage effort.
Our guide, Kasie, was knowledgeable and personable. Her obvious interest and enthusiasm for history made the tour especially enjoyable.
