We decided to detour from our road trip to Utah to check this place out, and we're so glad we did! The static displays include both steam and diesel locomotives and a small collection of cars, some very unique, and some open to go inside. There is also a former passenger car with model railroads inside and a small but well stocked gift shop.
Our favorite part, and the reason we detoured, was the excursion train on the former Boulder Branch.
It is pulled by a retired UP diesel (#844) and has a UP center cupola caboose with three coaches and two open platform cars. We spent the extra $10 each and took the caboose (locomotive rides are also available), and we think it was worth the extra money. Only the two crew members, Joe and Kim, were on it with us, and they were very cool cats. The train only goes out a few miles, then runs backward on the return trip, which was very cool from the caboose.
Entry is free, but donations are welcomed. Regular tickets are $10, with cab and caboose tickets another $10.
If you're in the area (Vegas is about 30 minutes away), I highly recommend it!

The main museum is in Carson City, but this is an enjoyable little museum. It's not a place I would go out of my way to visit, but if you are here to either ride the train or the Rail Explorer railcars, it is definitely worth seeing the exhibits. They have a 19th century private business car, a caboose, and a railway post office to explore.

We loved riding - it's pedal assist so not at all difficult. The cars go 15-20 mph - although you can coast most of the way if you wish. It was a lot of fun! We also checked out the train cars that were accessible (the Monster Train was set up for Halloween)

If you are into trains or just like history I definitely recommend this museum. We went on a Tuesday morning and no one was there. Was nice to have the place all to ourselves. It's free and it's outside. You also get to go into 2 of the cars which is really nice.

Nothing high tech or stunning about this museum - except for the old railroad cars with written history and the opportunity to get up inside to see for yourself. The love and dedication of the volunteers who run this little Museum was clearly apparent.

Little museum of trains. It was very interesting read about the Is Postal trains and also the one help the nuclear testing set. Interesting and informative. We roamed in the museum while waiting in Rail explores.

My husband was so fascinated by the old rail trains. Something different than the usual gambling Las Vegas strip

Horrible customer service. Ordered tickets on 11/29 it’s 12/3 still haven’t received em. I emailed dozen times and called. Still nothing. All I got was major attitude. Supposedly volunteers working, and they really don’t care. I spoke to Laura, David and Scott. All had different stories. Hard tickets, e tickets etc. yet never got em. Instead of an apology for spending hours wasting my time, they like to argue, and call you names! My whole family worked the railroads and we have a rich long history and I was looking to share my love with the next generation of kids. But never could simply get the tickets. David even started raising his voice after I told him he was on speakerphone with the kids in the room. Unacceptable I’m every way. DO NOT GO HERE. THEY TREAT PEOPLE LIKE CRAP AND RETIRED VETS EVEN WORSE! Take your business and hard earned money elsewhere.

We saw online that they had a Christmas Train in the evening. We booked the ride for our son. He really enjoyed it. We all did really, they stop at Santa's Village for some hot cocoa and cookie and you can take a picture with Santa.
If we could only make a couple suggestions for visitors is that make sure to bundle up, the night's cold crept up on us and we should have been a bit more prepared. That was our fault, but overall the ride was nice and the staff was super friendly. Totally recommend for kids and all the family.
Also it would be cool if the train did a Christmas song singalong during the ride.

We are visiting at Christmas this year, and will be in Vegas over the New Year period. When are you open? And do we need to book?

You can look around any day before 6 pm, but if you want to ride the train , you need to be there on Saturday and sundays before 3pm
