A small cemetery located just out of town near the railway line. It is very interesting wandering around reading the headstones and seeing the resting places of the people you hear in the stories told of Skagway.

Unfortunately, the weather wasn't kind to us at all on the day we came to this cemetery whilst in Skagway for the day. We didn't stay long but could see the potential for an interesting longer visit in better weather. The information board was very good with lots to explain the background of some of the people buried here. A lot of connection to the time of the Gold Rush and the location is very peaceful - except when the White Pass train goes by. Worth a visit!

Juste après avoir traversé le pont franchissant la rivière Skagway en se dirigeant vers la ville. On tourne à gauche.

A hidden gem not known to everyone, I knew about it bc YEARS ago if you're on the White Pass train you pass by.
A good 2 mile lengthy walk or you can take $5 shuttle each way.
Rich in history where most buried at this hilly cemetery died in either 1898 or 1900's.
Definitely rundown & in disarray but if you like history & looking at marble & Wood headstones it's definitely worth the trek from town.
Make sure you keep following the path to Reid Waterfall which is breathtaking & tranquil, just watch your footing.

Just outside of town down a gravel access road it is easy enough to find. We went there to see the legendary Soppy Smith gravesite.

We had been to Skagway a few times and had not visited the cemetery. The cemetery is located on the outskirts of town at the end of a gravel road past the rail yard. The cemetery has been maintained for visitors with replacement wooden markers. The two famous people are Jefferson "Soapy" Smith, a well known con man of the era and lawman Frank Reid. Frank Reid was hired to run "Soapy" out of town. There was a gunfight and both were killed. Frank Reid has a large stone monument while Soapy Smith has a wooden marker.

Position in some woodland, this small Gold rush cemetery sits. It’s shocking to see the average age of these men, mainly aged around 35 years old. Most of the graves are not well kept, I guess there are no relatives alive to maintain them.
It won’t take long to look around this cemetery. It’s not far from the cruise port probably 30 mins walk. There is a nearby waterfall to discover

Cute, not sure that is the right word but I think it fits, little cemetery with old headstones from the gold rush. Located a short walk from the cruise port, tucked in a forest.

We visited this graveyard as part of a tour of Skagway and, prior to arrival, had begun to hear the story of the criminally minded 'Soapy' and the determination of the town to be rid of him, so as to protect their reputation as a safe stop on the Gold Rush trail.
This made looking around the graveyard, which is small, much more interesting and we also heard about the different types of graves, their significance etc.
An interesting throwback to interesting times.

I am driving into town. Is there parking near the Gold Rush Cemetery?

Yes there is a parking area right near the cemetery and beautiful walk up to the waterfall. Lots of tour buses park out there too when they take the tours from the cruise ships out to these areas. And there is plenty of parking downtown.

There is a blue and white shuttle bus called SMART that takes you to 22nd and Alaska at the bridge (you'll still have to walk a mile each way on a gravel road to get there). Costs $2 one way or $5 all day unlimited rides. There are multiple shuttle stops int town to catch the northbound bus (not every bus goes out there). Or you can get a tour from any of multiple companies that will take you all the way there and give you a talk on the stories. There are multiple stories on the graves found on my site: Skagwaystories if you are interested in the history.

We took a trolley ride around town with a driver/guide that showed us all of the interesting sites with stories and explanations of each. Was well worth the price of the ticket. The trolley was an old 1920's Mack passenger bus that had been refurbished with modern running gear. There are other types of passenger transport methods also, but probably not as much fun and character as the old trolley. Highly recommended!
