Such a beautiful area! A lot of space depending on what you're wanting to do. Took away a star bc of parking, can really be a pain and I hate paying.
Snorkeling is amazing, so much to see; almost feels like an aquarium! They have a nice reef protection program with things going on all the time and a few times someone with defog spray for you. So cool!!
I love to come here for an easy, amazing snorkeling trip!

This is some of the best snorkeling on the Big Island but make sure you know how to get in! There is a sandy path that leads out into the bay but if you try to go over the rocks you will not only get beaten up by the surf but will also damage the delicate ecosystem. Once you are out in the water it is so clear and there are so many fish that it is like snorkeling in an aquarium. We saw countless varieties of fish, turtles, and eels.

Loved the beach and snorkelling. Easy access for swimming and safe for children. We brought a picnic lunch as no restaurants nearby. Some shade but mostly exposed to full sunshine. Lovely area.

We heard a lot of comments that this was the best place for snorkeling near us. We did NOT have a good experience. The water was rough and murky (could just have been the windy weather or the phase of the moon) and the rocks are ALL over the place. They are unexpected, slippery, and so easy to hurt yourself on. We barely saw ANY fish. All four of us had problems with our masks fitting properly, too. We rented them from across the street. We were unhappy with the entire experience.

Very good place to snorkel -- lots of beautiful fish, calm waters. Not much beach. There's a pavilion, toilets, and outside showers. Paid parking lot.

Bring your water-shoes and your snorkel. Tons of brightly colored fish to see. The rocks can be slippery when entering the water so be careful and take your time. But it's worth it for the great snorkeling.

One part of the bay is for snorkeling and the adjacent area is for surfing which is very convenient if your group has people who want to do one or the other. Both areas have their own surf life saving towers which is good to know.
We only snorkeled. As others have mentioned, it is tricky to get over the rocks to enter the water. It's one place where tabis would be well worth bringing along. While we didn't see any turtles this time, we did see a range of other fish, octopus and eels. One doesn't have to go far from the beach to have a decent snorkeling experience, although it can get a bit congested at times (flipper in face experience) closer in.
The ReefTech program operates at Kahaluu, providing free mineral-only sunscreen as well as rashies and a few other items for sale.

Nice typical Hawaii bay, snorkelling area is average there are fish but lots of rocks. Can be hazardous entering the sea. But once in floating across the rocks can see lots of fish. Didn’t see turtles. There is course Rocky sand beach a few tables and toilet so is pleasant.

Where do I begin to describe our disappointment. It started with a condescendingly rude employee and continued with shoddy equipment including goggles that lacked defogger making it very difficult to see under water. The Kahaluu Bay was promoted as one of the best areas for snorkeling and turtle watching. It was hazardous getting out to the reef due to the very slick, sharp rocks. We had two serious cuts and several falls and bruises in our group of 18. Which brings me to my disappointment in being charged $20 for a lost snorkel that refused to stay attached to my grandson’s mask after I had spent over $300 for 18 sets of gear. And the final disappointment was no turtles ANYWHERE. Visitors should also be aware there is limited parking, no food, water, rentals of umbrellas or chairs and virtually no shade. I would strongly recommend finding another place to get your equipment near a true snorkeling area.

Lovely spot. Not much of a beach, but pretty good snorkeling. Coral here is very stressed for lots of reasons, not least of which is people standing on it. So please remember: don't stand anywhere while snorkeling unless it is an emergency. Even rocks and sand are an important part of the reef (baby coral grows on rocks, and is so small you can't see it), so float, don't stand. Good place for families, though as mentioned, access is a pretty tricky. A bit tough to access for the elderly.

Kahaluu, two step and kaelekekua bay. 2 step is not beginner. Kealakekua is boat or kayak accessible. Great to take a body glove snorkeling tour to K Bay

Kahalu'u Beach Park near Keahou. If you are experienced snorkelers go to 2 step near Honaunau. It can be rough there but on calm days it is heavenly. Also take Body Glove or other boats to Kealakekua Bay.

Kahalu’u Beach Park is the best in Kona. It's a protective bay with decent snorkeling and to the right of the bay is a good surf spot. Also, a lot of great morning and afternoon boat trips depart from downtown Kona and will take you to the pristine marina sanctuary of Kealakekua Bay. That's my favorite place to snorkel.

Kayaks...yes. Kahala'u Bay Surf & Sea across from the Kahala'u Beach
Scritta in data 7 agosto 2017
Yes I believe you can, however you might be better off to go with Snorkle Bob's just up the street in Kona. You'll get a better selection, someone to fit the mask to your face and probably a better price for the week.
Kayaks to rent are at various places, and I believe across the street you can find some. We love Kona Boys Kayak rental, the price is great, the service great and we always go back.

Are there lockers to rent?
Scritta in data 5 aprile 2017
The beach food truck has rental lockers. There were a lot of people saying to just leave your stuff on the beach or on the tables. I live here and am down at the bay frequently and we never leave valuables there. Unfortunately there has been problems with theft. Better safe than sorry. It is still an incredible place.

I would like to know if there is public transportation along the route that goes to this beach. We will be coming from the cruise ship port for the day.
Scritta in data 31 ottobre 2015
Yes the bus starts at Sheraton Kona Resort & Spa and goes to to Keauhou Shopping Center, Magic Sands Beach Park, Walmart, Macy's, Kailua Pier, Kona Commons Shopping Center and numerous spots in between including Kahaluu Bay. The shuttle runs from 9:00am - 9:15pm.
