I stumbled across the Hualālai Crater Tour offered by Uluha’o o Hualālai (Hualālai.com). Tour was 5 hours - first meeting guide at gated entrance to the private property. Small tour consisting of myself, husband, and one other couple. Ride was in a 6-passenger, rugged Polaris Ranger and crossed thru several more gates. Kimo Duarte was our guide and had tremendous knowledge of the native and invasive plants, legends of the area, and was passionate about preserving the property (owned by the Bishop Trust). Kimo’s grandfather worked as a fencing contractor decades ago & was able to build a cabin on the property to live in while working up there. We got to visit the cabin (and use the outhouse) before traveling up the road to our final destination - the beginning of a hike to the top of the crater. I was not able to go too far due to a gimpy leg and the instability of the lava field being crossed. I told Kimo that I couldn’t go on & was heading back down, and he told me about another, smaller crater right by where he parked. I was able to sit & enjoy the view of the smaller crater and watch the clouds roll in. So incredibly peaceful! The hike was approx 1 mile up and 1 mile back. Tour starts at 7 am as the clouds start moving in around 10am. The rest of the group got to the crater just as clouds were coming in and didn’t get to fully experience the view but hubby said it was still impressive. On the way back down, we stopped and planted baby koa trees to help reforest the area. Proceeds from these non-profit tours (only offered 3x/wk) go toward preservation of the land and education for the island children which is their main focus. We felt that it was an incredible honor to be able to visit this amazing site and to experience it with Kimo who was so knowledgeable and enjoyable. Highly recommend supporting this organization!

The photos on the site are completely false. No observable fumaroles and incorrect geolocation. Conclusion: don't trust this attraction.

The firs thing you should know, is this property it's gorgeous but it has NO sandy beaches.
Now the big story....I requested a Kamaaina rate especially for locals, but sadly had an expired Hawaii identification card which caused such an uproar with management, the told me 'they were doing me a favor" by allowing me to stay there, that ONE time. How insulting.
I live mostly in Hawaii but also have property in California. during the pandemic I was in a position where I had to get one or the other form of REAL ID, you can not have both. I could not travel to Hawaii I was in California, I got the real id in CA. The Feds makes the rules now, you can not have both types of ID's in two states, it's just the way it is.
So, I plead my case to management, showed them all of my proof of living on island, my Hawaii electric bill, my bank statement, my cable bill, car insurance (yes I have a car too ) everything, my CA ID is still good for 4 years, and Hawaii is okay with me having it. Even the COPS are okay with it at the police station.
But the management at Four Seasons Hualailai can not see that I am in bind because of the laws, and won't offer me the rates that are due to me as a Kamaaina.
Eh...I even speak Pidgin.
I give my business to the REAL Kamaaina places, not the fake Aloha properties. No Beach, and no Aloha is what I tell everyone about Hualailai.

蒸気にあたった後は、服が水蒸気でしっとりしていました。匂いはなく、暖かさを感じます。こうした噴気孔が数カ所まとまってあります。足下の地下でマグマが活動していることを感じさせます。近くには伝説の花（名前を忘れました）が可憐に咲いています。

I traveled here to watch the Ironman World Championship, but stayed the week after to explore the entire island. There is such a great diversity of land, beach and seascapes on this island. From tropical rain forests to active volcanoes, it is filled with wonder and surprises. At current the lava flow on this Hawaiian Island is causing major concerns and has destroyed homes and caused evacuations and property damage. Volcano National Park is a definite must see, must experience. Incredible,incredible vacation.
Hualālai is an active volcano on the island of Hawaiʻi in the Hawaiian Islands. It is the westernmost, third-youngest and the third-most active of the five volcanoes that form the island of Hawaiʻi, following Kīlauea and the much larger Mauna Loa. Its peak stands 8,271 feet (2,521 m) above sea level. Hualālai is estimated to have risen above sea level about 300,000 years ago. Despite maintaining a very low level of activity since its last eruption in 1801, and being unusually inactive for the last 2,000 years, Hualālai is still considered active, and is expected to erupt again some time within the next century.

The volcano to the east of Kailua-Kona is Hualalai. Many of the homes of the community are built on higher ground where it is cooler and there are coffee plantations on the slopes because of the rainfall. The volcano always seem to be covered in a mist and a layer of thin clouds. We drove from the coastal highway (Queen Kaahumanu Highway) to Highway #180 which is built along the slopes of Hualalai. It was a gradual uphill climb till we reached #180. In our photos of the volcano from different viewpoints along the coast it always looked like it was raining at the higher elevations. Note that the lava flows that are along the coast north of Kailua-Kona are from this volcano.

This is a good spot to overlook the park and see the vast volcanic landscape down in the valley. There are also several different locations where you can see steam vents spewing out steam from deep within the earth.

This volcano is the third largest shield volcano and is quite productive. Viewing it after dark was sensational. Plenty of hikes and educational information available. Take your time to enjoy it.

Beaucoup émanation de gaz toxique en août 2017. Des routes coupées. Mais malgré tout celà vaut vraiment la peine.
