This is a Very Scary and unsafe neighborhood after dark even worse. we stayed in a great condo but the atmosphere on the main road looks gang like and dangerous. Lots of tailgaters partying at night. Run down Graffiti definitely not a place for any tourist.

What a sweet area. Houses like colorful chocolate boxes, friendly people (at least 5 or 6 residents, sitting on their porches, said hello.), lovely places to stop for a bite.

My son lives in the Bywater historical district (there are plaques to prove it) and I’ve visited a few times. It’s undergoing a gentrification but is still under the radar for most. The general vibe is low-key rather than excitement. However...
Some of the best inexpensive breakfasts in town can be found at Elizabeth’s and the Bywater Bakery (and others). For a surreal walk check out the ‘End of the World’ A-bomb warning siren site in the wasteland (way) behind the abandoned Naval base at the confluence of the Mississippi and the Bywater canal. From this walk you can view some of the good graffiti now covering the base. Be sure to take a friend or two along on this trek. There is a pokemon gym there if you need a map. Another place you won’t find on Trip Advisor is Vaughn’s which is a legendary dive (the place looks like it is about to collapse) with a high class blues/jazz pedigree. Bacchanal provides a unique high quality yet informal dining experience. Jack Dempsey’s is an old school steak and seafood place that I hope to try in the next few days.
I ‘m just scratching the surface. As mentioned elsewhere, this is a residential district so if traveling through, be mindful of the people who live there.

If you want to walk around and take a look at the unique Cottages and Shotgun homes, go for it. BUT... remember that it is ALL residential, try not to look inside the windows, you're being creepy. Even if it has changed over the years, what with hipster's and AirBnB taking over... doesn't mean that violence doesn't exist in that Faubourg (District). Try to stay safe while, "touring" the New Orleans residential area's. Don't be naive.

Enjoyed walking around the neighborhood. The houses are each unique and colorful. So much beauty and character. Each block has a personality.

The Bywater Historic District in New Orleans, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was mostly plantation land in the colonial era. Many people from France, Spain and the French Caribbean settled here. Historically, it is home to the site at which Homer Plessy was removed from an East Louisiana Railroad car from violating the separate car act, an event that resulted in the famous Plessy v. Ferguson case and the legal doctrine of "separate but equal." A historical marker stands at the intersection of Press Street and Royal Street to commemorate the event. Today, Bywater and neighboring Faubourg Marigny are two of the most colorful neighborhoods in New Orleans. The architectural styles borrow heavily from the colonial French and Spanish and have elements of the Caribbean. This blending over the last three centuries has resulted in an architectural style unique to the city. Bywater is bounded by Florida Avenue to the north, the Industrial Canal to the east, the Mississippi River to the south and the railroad tracks along Homer Plessy Way (formerly Press Street) to the west. After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, many survivors flocked to the area as it was less affected by the storm, due to the slightly higher elevation closer to the Mississippi River. Bywater became what was known as the "Sliver in the River," meaning neighborhoods that saw no flooding, including Faubourg Marigny and the French Quarter.

Because we had a private car, we could drive around the area and see all the homes. We had coffee and cake at Solo Espresso which was really yummy and we walked Crescent Park. It was great to check out this area of the city.

Lovely neighborhood, way more chill than the French Quarter. Less touristy, delicious restaurants in the area, nice bars, and beautiful architecture.

It's easy to spend a part of a day or even a whole day in the Bywater Neighborhood. This neighborhood has a cool, experimental vibe. There are plenty of eateries, music venues, art spots and interesting things to see. From Dr. Bob's to The Joint, Euclid Records to Frady's, The Bargain Center to New Orleans Center for Creative Arts...there are a ton of things to see. If you like to walk it is not too far from the French Quarter through Faubourg Marigny.

During the day it seems fine, but at night i wouldnt walk around the neighborhood, it'd be better to take a uber or cab. Its poorly lit and feels run down in some areas.
