Easy public transportation to anywhere in NOLA. Bohemian charm with cute shops and great eateries. Lilly’s and Gris Gris wonderful. Beautiful St.Mary’s Assumption Church a real gem. Historic landmark with incredible carved statuary and German stained glass windows. The pews were massive and mahogany. Plus, shrine of Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos, a Redemtorist missionary very well done.

We took the street car (see listing) then spent some time walking around on our own along St Charles, and Prytania (out on one, back on the other) as far as Napolean and back. Those of you who know the city better than I do can correct me if I'm wrong about this but I think after we crossed Louisiana we left the Garden District proper to to the Lower Garden District. Again, I apologize if I have the boundaries wrong. It was a nice (but very humid) walk past some lovely homes and gardens, very few businesses. Lots of young women jogging along the tracks on St Charles. Many other people were out enjoying the day as well and every single one greeted us. That wouldn't happen somewhere like the south side of Chicago or even in my own town.

On our December trip to New Orleans, we had the opportunity to spend some time, once again, in the Lower-Garden District, though mostly along St Charles Ave. We took the St Charles Ave Streetcar to the Pontchartrain Hotel, to meet family for Brunch at the Caribbean Room, in that hotel.

The Streetcar ride was lovely, as the weather was great, albeit a little cool – but then, it was December.

After the meal, and a stop into the Bayou Bar, in that hotel, we strolled along St Charles Ave, up to the fairly recently-opened Indigo Hotel, and then over to Prytania St via Jackson Ave, for a walk back toward the CBD (Central Business District), and then back to St Charles Ave on Thalia St.

Both St Charles Ave, and Prytania St were lovely, and there were already many Holiday decorations on both businesses, and then many of the grand houses along Prytania St.

There were signs of quite a bit of renovation, and mostly with the private homes. It seemed as though about 1:6 had work being done. The businesses, along St Charles Ave were thriving, by the numbers of people, that we saw entering, or lining up to enter. It also appeared that many new businesses were being added along “The Avenue.”

A lovely day, and a lovely stroll, through a beautiful section of New Orleans.

The Garden District has always been considered to historically run from Louisiana Ave to Jackson Avenue, and St, Charles Ave to Magazine. Just ask the folks who pay the huge security services taxes in that area every year and who belong to The Garden District Association. They will fill you in real quick.

Garou, If you are from here you know when you are in the Garden District and Anne Rice's home has ALWAYS been in THE GARDEN DISTRICT!

We grew up in (wife is a native), or near (I am from the Mississippi Gulf Coast) New Orleans, an the Lower Garden District has always been a favorite neighborhood of ours. It has had some ups, and downs, and seems to be doing better, based on what we saw this trip. Back in our youth, the area was just part of “Uptown,” being upriver from Canal St. The term, “Lower Garden District” was applied later, but seems to have stuck.

Since we lived in the City, there has been much “gentrification,” and the Lower Garden District is a prime example, especially in areas, such as Coliseum Square. OK, there are still some rough areas, where major revitalization is necessary, but much is being done, and it shows.

We saw a lot of new restaurants, and tons of new construction and reconstruction, so I would expect many improvements to the area, on our next trip. Maybe the newish name will bring good fortune, such as it did to the Warehouse District, which was just getting started, before we moved from New Orleans – and look at it now!

We stayed in the Lower Garden District and walked around. Beautiful historic homes and many great places to eat. The neighborhood is old and so are the sidewalks - pay attention for imperfections.

A continuation of the Garden District. Area is just as charming with beautiful houses, great tree cover and places to stop and eat. The best way to see it close up is to walk around. You can take the streetcar to save time, but you should get off to explore than get back on. A great place to see.
