Serene, sad, solomen, uplifting and a place I found myself sitting on a bench reflecting on life and so many 'what ifs'. The monument to the Zulu dead is beautiful and the site reports on both adversaries. Its so sad that there are places around the world repeating these same mistakes and not learning from them. Nice little cafe on site too.

The museum is dated and worn and poorly lit. Thulani, the resident guide, is quite a performer and appears dedicated to telling the story. It was a hot day and the travel to the museum was over a gravel and dusty road. We picnicked on the grounds and enjoyed listening to the nearby schoolchildren playing at recess. Thulani's presentation was too long, I wanted to walk through the museum, read the plaques, and go at my own pace. A bit too much performance for the requited tips.
I think a visit to the Zulu lsandlwana followed by Rourkes Drift would have been more meaningful to me.

I’ve always wanted to visit this site, ever since I saw the movie “Zulu” back in the 1960s. The movie was filmed many miles away and the terrain here doesn’t look anything like the film’s. The hospital building was destroyed in the battle. It was rebuilt and today houses the museum. The storehouse is still there but has been remodeled into a church. There are several other buildings now there that weren’t there during the battle. There are rock lines set into the ground showing where the barricades were located during the battle. Our guide went into great detail about what happened there. It was fascinating.

The museum was a bit of a let down. It had some exhibits but it was kind of run down. They didn’t have a gift shop and they didn’t have any battlefield guides or self-guided tours. I had read that the battlefield wasn’t very informative and if you didn’t have a guide you wouldn’t know what was what. We used Day Tours KZN. I highly recommend them.

We visited the battlefield on a tour from Fugitives Drift Lodge where we were staying. The late owner of the lodge had pre-recorded some CD's which took you through the story and when combined with the driver/guide this provided a layered experience of what could have been quite boring. My husband loves battlefield history, but even I really enjoyed the experience and left feeling as if I really understood what happened here. The film Zulu was the inspiration for our visit here, but be aware the film is not 100% accurate.

Fabulous - But must be with a guide. We went with the Rattray guide which was extraordinary. it is a small place so you can well imagine the defending of this place with the surrounding hills.

Went to Isandwlana and Rorke’s Drift as part of a tour. Our local Zulu guide (Dalton who is a descendent of a Zulu warrior who was part of this) made the history so real- he is an excellent storyteller. Very hot while we were there so advise lots of sunscreen and long sleeves. Well worth a visit.

A must see in conjunction with Isandwlana battle fields. The museum is a treasure in itself. A nice walk down to the Buffalo river

We had a Zulu guide walk us through the courageous battle where British defenders held off a determined attack while they were vastly outnumbered. You were placed into the middle of the battle, lived the heroic incidents and when the battle was over, you visited the memorials. These were desperate feats of heroism. I enjoyed being on that tiny battlefield.

Firstly I would like to write about the our arrival at the museum on the Sunday afternoon in sunshine after the long drive from Durban.
The museum/cafe and shop was a short distance from our accommodation at the wonderful Rorke's Drift Lodge(the home of Paul and Christine, Paul giving us the battlefields tour the following day).
At the museum, in the cafe we were met by a wonderful human being, Thulani, himself a gentleman of culture and history, the curator here who always takes battlefield tours. This was a privilege meeting, Thulani what a credit you are to this museum, your culture and the fact that we spent over an hour at the cafe with you sharing your experiences, stories and the amazing history of this area. Thank you, this was our first encounter with the whole Rorke's Drift history and you set the scene for our excellent full day's tour with Paul the following day.
Excellent museum/cafe/shop, such friendly staff/volunteers and safe parking.
So much to explore, of course we did the following day with Paul, the whole story of this historic battle against all of the odds, immortal experience and a dedicated place to pay homage to the 11 Victoria crosses awarded and the bravery of so few man when faced with some 3,500 of so Zulu's.
Original hospital and storeroom, some walls, a small cemetery, and a beautiful cheetah statue to admire.
This is a must visit and I cannot speak highly enough of the people like Thulani and Paul who keep the memories of so history alive, brilliant experience!!!

the actual building is gone and the area is different so you cant really get a feel for it unlike the battle fied a short while away, a nice place and museum to learn about the history of what happened here, note some quotes in the museum are made up for dramatic effect which is a let down, as you dont notice till you have read the quote and it is labeled so at the bottom
