This is a great area to include as part of your deeper exploration of Brooklyn.
Great cafes, top restaurants including modern and classic Polish delis offer a range of experiences rapidly disappearing from the city.
Manhattan and Franklin avenues provide plenty of sites, as do the historic areas around Oak & Guernsey streets.
Check out the sights from the Girls TV show or even just the crap at the Newtown wastewater treatment plant - who knows you may get lucky and walk into one of the many TV or films being shot in the area.

It is evidentially a Polish area by the deli outlets and liquor stores selling every type of vodka. Even the signage is in Polish.
I did feel safe although I did struggle to find a cafe until I went to the park area which has a lovely selection including a micro brewery. The park is not huge but used by locals and families especially during hot summers evenings. As already stated by another reviewer it doesn't have the presence of other neighbourhoods but wonder beyond the high street and there are lovely brownstone houses set on avenues with trees hence the name! Some areas are run down but I'm sure with areas constantly changing these will renovate with popularity.

I'd been here at a previous job and when passing through during my moveout of NYC. This neighborhood overall doesnt have anything very exciting and seems to be nothing more than a transition between Williamsburg and Southwest Queens. It is said to be a Little Poland of Brooklyn, that will be changing with the gentrification effect from Williamsburg but even without that it doesnt seem overwhelmingly Polish the way Staten Island is overwhelmingly Italian, the way Lower Manhattan is overwhelmingly East Asian, and the way Central Brooklyn is overwhelmingly West Indian. The housing stock here is not impressive at all, mostly smaller row homes most of which appear to be less than 4 stories high. The subway access here is no good really because it relies on the less than fully reliable G train. The proximity to the Newtown creek industrial area helps keep this a relatively unpretty neighborhood. I always thought this was a slightly safer neighborhood in Brooklyn but was once told by a guy whose father was a cab driver that back in the day there was alot of gang activity here too. The rents are probably more reasonable here than other Brooklyn neighborhoods but overall its not worth coming to if you are a tourist.

Greenpoint, a historically Polish district, is Brooklyn's north-westernmost neighborhood. It is supposedly bland, & among Brooklyn neighborhoods it is admittedly not up there with Park Slope or Cobble Hill; but it has quite a lot to see for the intrepid explorer who likes architecture - bring a copy of the architectural guidebook AIA GUIDE TO NEW YORK CITY. At the western end of India Street is a long pier for the East River Ferry, which has a superb view of Midtown & Lower Manhattan, Roosevelt Island & Queens. Further south, at the unofficial border with the Williamsburg neighborhood, is the large McCarren Park; this park is nothing special, but immediately west of the intersection of Nassau Avenue, Berry Street, Bedford Avenue & Lorimer Street, at the edge of the park, is the small Jerzy Popieluszko Garden, with a bust of the courageous young Roman Catholic priest & Polish patriot (1947-84), beaten to death by henchmen loyal to the communist regime; in good weather, elderly men here sit chatting in Polish. Not far away, at Driggs Avenue & 12th Street, is the interesting Russian Orthodox Cathedral of the Transfiguration of Our Lord (1921). Also interesting is the Astral Apartments (1886), a delightful Victorian on Franklin Street between India Street & Java Street. Kent Street has lovely townhouses from the 1850's & 60's. Also worth a browse is Manhattan Avenue, the neighborhood's main shopping strip, with Slavic eateries, & Polish signs on storefronts. The northern end of Greenpoint is the Newtown Creek, which forms the border with Queens. It is spanned by several bridges, the westernmost of which is the high Pulaski Bridge (1954); a fine walk is to or from Queens, to admire the great view of Manhattan from the bridge. The Queens neighborhood here is Long Island City, which also has interesting architecture.
