This is a National Park. Small but interesting visitors center. The main part is the battlefield itself. There is a long loop drive around the actual sites. We didn't drive the whole thing. They have interpretive signage at the various sites. Not really much to see but allows you to envision where the siege actually took place. Wish they would place some cannon and maybe reconstruct a small section. Eerie to think of the thousands soldiers that were here almost 250 years ago fighting and dying for our freedom.

Much bigger battlefield than I was expecting. You can walk or bike the whole route, but it's probably easiest (read: fastest) to drive. There are a lot of signs along the way, indicating encampments, a field hospital, etc., and there's an app you can download as well to listen to more information about the different areas.

The drive is lovely, much of it through a quiet, pretty forest, so best to take your time and enjoy it, while also learning along the way.

The visitor center has some good information too, as well as some cannons, and tents that George Washington used, which was pretty cool.

Yorktown is what you expect to see when learning about the birth of our country. This was our favorite. We did not do a tour. We were able to tour ourselves at our own pace. The museum was excellent as well as the outside area. Colonial clothed people were well versed at each station. One of the high lights was learning how to shoot the musket and witnessing it being shot. My husband was in his glory when he was offered to hold the HEAVY musket.
There is also another area of Yorktown that included many Colonial stores. You must visit the Confectionary store. They sell ice cream there. Being lactose intolerant it is very difficult to find dairy free ice cream. There, I ate a delicious pistachio vegan ice cream. In fact, we went back another time for more. It was absolutely delicious! If you walk down the street there is a huge monument, which is interesting to read. Adjacent to the monument is a road that leads to the river. It truly is a pretty site to see.

We were traveling from Virginia Beach to Williamsburg and stopped here and glad we did. Make sure to visit the visitor center first. There is an excellent film as a reminder about the history of the area. Plus we received a driving map and app to install on our phone. There is a museum and gift-shop to tour as well (pay fees to enter or use your America the Beautiful pass).

There are picnic tables outside for a nice lunch under the trees and lots of parking. There is also a shuttle bus that drives into the nearby city of York at no charge.

The phone app provides details on several areas where you drive and then stop and listen to the history. Be careful as you drive, since some of the road is on public roads and people are driving to/from work or into town. There are areas to park the car and walk which we did at some of the raised embankments. Enjoyable time.

If you are doing Yorktown and Jamestown, be aware that it can be confusing. When we went to the visitor center for Yorktown which is run by the National Parks Service, we bought tickets that were good for Yorktown and Jamestown...the actual land around the settlement (the settlement is managed by another org and you have to pay an addition fee for that which is worth it) which is also run by the National Parks Service. The tickets are good for several days which is nice. I have more in the my Jamestown review if interested. At Yorktown, we walked the dirt path that has markers, viewed the monument and then went to the visitors center which has a small museum and film...both are good to view. The rest of the tour is by car. We actually did this on a rainy day which worked out great...very few people on the roads and the scenery really popped with the rain. So my best advice before you start the drive tour is to download the Yorktown Tour Guide from the American Battlefield Trust...it is in your ap store. We followed the map on the ap and were able (esp since there was no traffic) to stop at each site and listen to a short audio (only a couple of minutes) which made us feel like we had our own private tour guide in the car with us. You can also use the ap when you walk around town. I'm not sure why the park rangers only give you a paper map and don't mention this ap, but this made the tour way better!

Great part of American history. The story of Yorktown, the battlefield, and the surrender are a very vital aspect of our history. Many different elements came together to give Gen. George Washington a victory. The video and displays in the Visitor's Center are well worth the time, and help to give you a better appreciation of the parts of the battlefield like Redoubts 9 & 10.

Based on the site’s historical significance and the excellent app-based driving tour and signage, this is a must-see five-star experience. The film at the Visitors Center provides a great overview of the siege and the people involved. The museum exhibits are not as extensive as those at the other locations in the Williamsburg-Jamestown-Yorktown Historic Triangle, which is a minor disappointment. Still, this National Park is significant and worth a visit.

One of the best things we did on our trip! Went to the Yorktown battlefield visitor center, which was interesting. Had a small display of a ship inside that was fun to see what the layout of the ships would look like. Then we downloaded the app for the battlefield tour, and proceeded through the driving tour. Some people in our party got out at all stops and loved walking through all the trenches, while others got out and walked partially. Also gave someone with mobility issues the ability to just stay in the car, yet see a lot of the sites. Would definitely recommend this for families with different abilities, and anyone that loves history.

We visited over Thanksgiving 2023. We were traveling with our furbaby and all activities had to be dog-friendly. The park was almost empty. On the self guided drive through we didn’t see anyone else. The park was peaceful and the fall colors were lovely. The only place the furbaby couldn’t access was the museum. So we took turns looking at the exhibits.

The area carries a lot of historical significance, but it honestly feels a little bit empty in terms of actual things to see. There are a couple exceptions, but for the most part the sites nowadays have returned to being wild fields without much trace of what once happened here.
