The civic theater was packed for the opening of the 2019-2020 San Diego Opera season with the presentation of Giuseppe Verdi’s Aida.
The civic theater has nearly 3000 seats which is really big for opera venues which are generally 1000-2000. So for operas at civic theater, the singers really need to have bug voices that can carry to the upper balconies.
And operatic voices are not amplified... no electronic assistance to amplify their voices throughout the auditorium. An opera singer’s voice carries purely based on their own ability to project, using the power if their diaphragm + incredible training and control.
There are still three more performances, so go to see Aida at the Civic Theater. If you miss Aida, check out the rest of the SD Opera calendar at Civic Theater.... Hansel & Gretel is forthcoming in February 2020 and The Barber of Seville in April 2020

The first time I went to the Sa Diego Civic Center, was in the 1970’s, to see a group called “Kiss.” It was wonderful back then and I’ve gone off and on over the years to see plays and musicians like David Sanborn and Al Jarreau. I went recently on 9/22 to see Casting Crowns, and while we enjoyed the music very much, this old theater is in dire need of maintenance and refurbishment. Essentially, it’s old and falling apart. It would be great if they restored it.

This musical was just fabulous, the costumes, beautiful, the set design unique and the talent was phenomenal! It's too bad that today was the last day for this performance. If you've never been to the Civic Theater, it is a huge venue. I typically get seats in the lower lodge area which gives you a really good view of the entire stage, and the prices for these seats won't break the bank. The sound is great anywhere you sit, but if you go higher than lower lodge, you may want to bring a pair of binoculars. Also if you go on a Sunday early enough, you can usually find free parking on the street. There are plenty of places to eat lunch before the show.

We went to Book of Mormon on 27JUL. $1200.00 7 for tickets. Theater was lovely and there's not a bad seat in the house. Sound quality wasn't great, we missed a lot of the dialog and lines from the music.
In addition to the sound quality being hit and miss we had an absolutely obnoxious idiot sitting behind us ... i.e when the curtain went up (nothing as yet had happened) he issued a loud guffaw and laughed loudly. At nothing. He sang aloud, he parroted lines from the show, and frequently shouted random words after one of the performers said them "Mormon" or "Japan." Several in our row asked him to be quiet to no avail.
At intermission he was a completely normal human being. I decided to speak to an usher. I told them he was essentially ruining the performance for us (and somebody standing nearby who heard our conversation concurred it would be annoying), explaining all the behavior.
About 10 minutes later another usher shows up, stands RIGHT in front of me and says to the row behind me ... "please no singing - don't sing during the performance" and walked away. That was it. Obnoxious man didn't even look up from his phone and in the second act actually sang even more than the first.
I know it's a public place, but I spent $1200 on tickets and feel my whole experienced was ruined.
I called the theater on Monday and left them a voice mail, also sent an email and asked to be called, and I never heard back from anybody.
I'd think twice before going back here.

The performance was amazing. Wonderful acting, dancing and music!
This is a very old feeling venue. A bit like it was in it’s prime in the 1960s. The seats are comfy and most every seat has an excellent view. Don’t bother spending top dollar for better seats. Just pick an average view and you’ll be fine.
You will pay top $ for food and drinks, so go out for happy hour before you arrive. No need to dress up too fancy. Dressy casual seemed to be the average.

We have seen a few plays and our recent favorite was Aladdin. A little tidbit would be to warn you that the outside parking lot across the street costs $25.00. There is no sign but we only discovered the cost after we paid in the machine.

Lots of parking around the theater, $10 to $20 depending on lot. Acoustics were great and we could see fine from balcony, probably one section lower would be better.

This theater is beautiful, and the way the staff managed the crowds before and after the performance was actually astounding. All the seats looked good, sound was rich and of a good volume, and there were plenty of restrooms.
This was a great experience.

I think it depends what type of event you are attending and what your preferences are.
We generally attend the opera and for twenty years we had seats in row D and we also had sone seats in row B for guests.
In all of those seats, but especially the row B seats, they provided great closeness to the stage, but one had to angle one’s neck to see the supertitles above the stage.
We have since changed our seats to row F and we find that it has made a big difference.
And so now whenever I purchase seats at the Civic, I try for rows F through H in the center.
If you don’t have to worry about super titles then D & E are great also.
But at the end if the day, it depends what you like.
Some people love the loges because it affords them the full-stage view with some height.
Enjoy!
I just got tickets to see the Nutcracker off Groupon. I got seat in the "Dress Circle or the rear Mazzanine. Are the decent seats?

Coming in November for the Boston-type Half Marathon,. What would be a few choices for an economical/ inexpensive hotel "near" the start (which I understand will be at the Civic Center)?.. Thank you.
