One feels a sincere sense of pride when entering this former chapel. The stained glass windows are lovely. The displays contributed by many veterans are very informative. One cannot leave without a renewed awareness and appreciation for the sacrifices veterans have made for our country.

Being a former chapel, the stained glass is a beautiful tough for this museum for veterans. A definite stop on your visit to the area!

A wonderful way to learn about the men and women who have served our country. I particularly like the women in the military display. The greeter, a veteran, was delightful to talk to.

We were given a scavenger hunt that allowed us to find things throughout the museum. There is lots of reading! We learned things that we did not know about several wars, especially Vietnam.

This is a little gem in San Diego. We really enjoyed spending 90 minutes here. It is a wonderful Museum near Balboa Park. Free parking and free admission but they do accept donations.
The museum covers veterans and has a very nice room dedicated to female veterans. It is well worth a stop if you have an hour or two. We especially enjoyed chatting with a docent who also happened to be a retired Navy captain and one of the original founders of the museum.
The murals on the walls are also nothing short of amazing. It was noteworthy to see the autographs of the Pearl Harbor Survivors that have visited this Museum including Medal of Honor recipients. And also enjoyed seeing autographed mural by Senator John McCain.

San Diego’s Veterans Museum and Memorial Center is dedicated to create, maintain, and operate an institution to honor and perpetuate the memories of the men and women who have served in the Armed Forces of the United States of America. The museum currently resides in the former Chapel of the Balboa Naval Hospital which is not in the main section of Balboa Park. As a result it doesn’t seem to get as much traffic as its counterpart museums in Balboa Park. For us we had been there 5 years earlier and it did not appear we had much to see beyond what we previously observed. Nevertheless, it does provide a sense of life in the armed services, and once again reminds one how fortunate we are to have service persons watching our backs. Plan to spend an hour and you will be glad you did.

In this modern day and time, we sometimes pay tribute to the wrong "heroes"; you know them. They are the sports figures and movie stars who have never been to a military base let alone served any time in Our Country's military. They often complain in the media about just how difficult their particular sport or next movie role assignment is. You never hear of them thinking about those who served our country defending THEIR freedoms. The Veterans Museum and Memorial Center near the San Diego Zoo is a great reminder of what a TRUE AMERICAN HERO actually is.
The building is very meaningful in its own right; there next to the parking lot, all dressed up in its white dress uniform, standing at attention, ready for your inspection. It is very awe inspiring causing you to think about the many significant sacrifices by our men and women it represents from ALL Branches of our Armed Forces.
It is especially touching to walk through the garden just outside and stand near the B-24 Liberator display in the fountain area. Please take the time to read the inscription on the bronze scroll that pays tribute to this TRUE WWII hero and the crews that courageously flew them.

The centre seems to be very modest in size from the outside but belies the quantity and quality of the displays housed inside.
We stopped by on our return from a visit to the Zoo and unfortunately only had 20 minutes to wiz around the exhibit before they closed which was a shame as it deserves more time to fully appreciate the displays which cover a multitude of conflicts over the 20th century
