Waiola Congregational Church
The original church was built by Native Hawaiians on the orders of their chiefs for the new Protestant mission. The church could hold 3,000 worshippers. Waine’e served as the church for the royal family when Lahaina was the Kingdom’s capital. The first two churches were thatched and were destroyed by high winds and in 1947 was burned down by supporters of the deposed Queen Liliuokalani. The present church was built of concrete. Its named was changed to Waiola which means “water of life”. On the other side of the church is a large assembly hall.

WAIOLA CEMETERY
Waiola Cemetery (Waine’e) is next to the Waiola Congregational Church and is the final resting place for the great and common people of Old Lahaina. Both It holds the monuments to royalty including Queen Keopuolani, the first Hawaiian baptized as a Protestant, King Kaumuali’I, the last king of Kauai, as well as the first Protestant missionary, Rev. William Richards. Both the famous, native Hawaiians and the unknown are buried side by side.

This church has a history of destruction and rebuilding that’ll make you wonder! The superstitious might have interpreted the events as a message, but the persevering congregants simply didn’t give up.

Originally called the Waine’e Church, built-in 1823, the original building lasted only three years to be lost to strong winds. The church was rebuilt and completed in 1832, but then in 1894, it burned to the ground. The church was rebuilt again, lasted another 50 some-odd years and burned once again. Again the congregants rebuilt, and in 1951 (three years time, again) the church was destroyed by “Kaua’ula” winds. In 1954 the church finally got a bit superstitious and changed its name to Waiola Church.

In the back of the churchyard is a row of some of the oldest palm trees in Lahaina.

Waiola Cemetary is listed on the walking tour billboards throughout historical Lahaina town. This is a well-tended and well-loved graveyard with significant historical roots of royalty and Hawai’ian people. On most Saturday mornings you will find the caretakers of the cemetary working hard to keep it beautiful. Drop by and speak with these friendly people. They will likely take the time to give you some of the history of both the graveyard and church. Queen Keopuolani and other royal family members are buried here. Keopuolani was the highest ranking wife of Kamehameha I. She founded the Waiola Church which is well worth a visit on Sunday mornings for worship. Be prepared to stay after church for a real local, homemade meal and friendly conversation, Hawai’ian style.

The first Christian Church in the Hawaiian islands, open walled facility let’s in light and birdsong during the service, which have scripture and songs in Hawaiian. It is now a United Church of Christ (UCC) Next to the cemetery where early members of the royal family are buried.

ラハイナの町を散歩しているときに見つけました。後でガイドブックで見ましたが古い教会らしく、写真だけは収めてきました。クリスマス&ニューイヤーに向けてのイルミネーションできらきらしていました。

This church belonging to the United Church of Christ was the first stone church built in Hawaii between 1828-1832. A windstorm in 1858 took off the roof and blew the church’s bell a distance of some 100 feet. A 1947 fire caused extensive damage and just 4 years later, more damage was caused by another windstorm. Some of the oldest palm trees in Lahaina are on its property and next door is the Wainee Cemetery which contains the grave of Queen Keopuolani (wife of King Kamehameha I). Other headstones mark the final resting place of missionaries, chiefs and other Lahaina notables.

We visited for church service and were in awe of the beauty that this church holds. The service was a wonderful mix of English and Hawaiian and the lay minister and others greeted us very warmly. The lay minister was so kind to accommodate my request for a video of her saying the Lords Prayer in Hawaiian. Thank-you so very much for doing that for me.

Before your visit, do some research on the history of this church. The sacred cemetery here is a must-see for anyone interested in the Ali'i. Hawaiian Royalty are buried here, including the Christian wife (queen) of Kamehameha I.

The church was built between 1828 and 1832. It was damaged several times by strong winds and even burned down. When the new church was built, it was renamed Waiola (water of life).
Chiefs and commoners alike lie side by side in this tranquil graveyard.
