Hauola Stone is a large stone, in the shape of a low-backed chair and believed by Hawaiians to hold healing powers. It sits in Lahaina harbor where the sea and the underground freshwater meet. Right in front of the old Taro patch which is in front of the Library.
We did find this area completely overtaken with homeless people but we were able to walk over to where the stone is.
The chair was hard to see at first since we were there at high tide, but we finally were able to make it out.
We read that during the 14th and 15th centuries, the ancient Hawaiians used this stone, as a birthing stone for royalty. When the chief’s ‘wife was ready to give birth, her attendants would help her into the stone, assist in delivering her child, and witness the birth.
If you are downtown in the waterfront area it is easy to find.

Small place, looks bigger in pictures, but nice stop on our shopping in Lahaina day. Make sure to catch it when you go see the banyan tree.

My family was in Lahaina, Maui on a self-guided tour when we noted the marker for the Hauola Stone. It is below the seawall at the northern shoreline of the plaza behind the Lahaina Public Library. The stone resembles a stone, chair. During the 14th and 15th centuries, the ancient Hawaiians used this stone, as a birthing stone for royalty. When the chief’s ‘wife was ready to give birth, her attendants would help her into the stone, assist in delivering her child, and witness the birth.
The Hauola Stone was believed by Hawaiians to have healing powers. The chair is located where the sea and underground fresh water meet, so people with medical issues would sit in the chair and let the combination of waters flow over their body for healing. We found it educational and a point of interest from another culture. It was high tide when we were there, but we were still able to recognize the chair under water. If you are in Lahaina, take time to check it out.

Located in Lahaina Harbor, just behind the Lahaina Public Library, the Hauola Stone is molded into the shape of a low-backed chair and was believed by Hawaiians to hold healing powers. The chair was also used in the early 1400's as a birthing stone for Hawaiian royalty.
There is a plaque, which gives more information, near the stone.

A beautiful spot to relax after walking through all the stores on Front Street. At the edge of the water is a stone that was used for birthing by the Hawaiian Royalty. Interest spot. The signage there will tell you the story.

This was a birthing stone for the Hawaiian royalty in times past. Interesting history.
As for being able to see it depends on the tide. The tide was up while we were there, so not much could be seen. Try to go there during low tide.

Pick up a map for a self guided walking tour of Old Lahaina. In the water is a stone that was used for the birth of Hawaiian royalty. If you are going to Oahu, or have seen the birthing stones there it is a nice accent to see/compare the birthing stones they have in a farm field with a gorgeous view of the mountains.
