First Lighted Navigational Aid in Hawaiian Islands

The lighthouse is located at the edge of Lahaina Harbor and was commission in 1840 by Kamehameha III. The original structure was nine-foot tall and was made of wood. At the top was a lamp that was lit by the native Hawaiian caretaker with whale oil. It was the first lighted navigational aid for whaling ships entering the harbor. When shipping traffic increased, another 26 feet was added to it. The lighthouse tower was rebuilt in concrete and dedicated in 1916.

Why doesn't the town make a bigger deal about this?

I gotta tell you, I walked past this lighthouse and didn't even know it was there until I went on TripAdvisor looking for another listing. After reading one of the reviews this lighthouse has some significance in the town's history and it would have been nice to know this while I was there.

There are so many opportunities for the town to draw attention to this piece of history on Front Street and at the Visitor center and they just do not. A shame not to make this more prominent.

Historical and a navigational aide.

In 1840, Kamehameha III commissioned a nine-foot tall, box-like wooden tower to be built as a navigational aid for ships entering Lahaina’s roadstead. At the top was a lamp that was lit with whale oil and tended by a Native Hawaiian caretaker. When it was lit on November 4, 1840, it was the first lighted navigation tower in the Hawaiian Islands, predating any lighthouse on the U.S. Pacific Coast.

In 1937, it was powered by electricity and today, power comes from the sun. The signal light flashes red every 7.5 seconds.

It serves as a great meeting place and a beautiful viewing area for the harbor.

A Bit of History

This is an attraction for history buffs. The lighthouse was not only the first in Hawaii but also the first on the US Pacific Coast. Located in front of the Pioneer Inn, it was built in 1840 to help guide whaleboats that were coming ashore. The tower grew from a 9-foot wooden tower at construction to 26 feet in 1866. Whale oil provided the light that was kept burning by a Hawaiian lighthouse watchman. In 1905, it was rebuilt and in 1916, the US Coast Guard dedicated the current concrete lighthouse. It is in the center of Lahaina off Front Street.

ホテルの目の前で、オプショナルツアーでラハイナハーバーを利用する場合、必ずここの灯台も下に集合と書いてあります。朝は灯台のしたはたくさんのツアー客でごった返します。自分のツアーがどれなのかきちんと確認しないと日本人はいませんので要注意です。灯台自体、どうこういうことはありません。

角ばった外観の灯台

ラハイナハーバーに立つ白亜の灯台です。円柱形では無く、角ばった外周が特徴的でした。陸側からは目立たない位置となっていましたが、潜水艦アトランティスへ向かう際に乗船したシャトルボート船上からははっきりと見て取れました。
