Son picked this out as a stop to make on our road to Hana and so glad he did. Interesting quarter mile walk through an underground path that was once full of lava. Signage provides a good summary of what you are seeing throughout your walk. This is a business and not affiliated with a local, state or government park system and set up on the honor system for people not to disturb the features of the tube. Definitely an enjoyable part of our trip and a nice way to stretch your legs. It is challenging terrain - not physically - but the ground is uneven and slippery in parts. Not a complaint, just an observation.

At the very end of the tube we were by ourselves so we shut off all of the provided flashlights. Crazy dark.

This place is awesome! (And underpriced!) You get to walk down into a lava tube that is quite large, and you go for about 1/4 mile or more. There are excellent signs explaining what you are seeing, and a variety of lava tube features (e.g., chocolate kiss lava formed on the ceiling, a "bowling alley" effect on the floor, a skylight, a cave in, etc. And everywhere there is something interesting, they have very helpful and informative (and brief) signs that explain what you can see. You walk at your own pace, with excellent bright flashlights. (We got an early start on the drive, and got there right when it opened at 10:30--- had it mostly to ourselves.) Of course there are steps and uneven ground-- it isn't Disney World! It provides an extraordinary explanation and education on how the tube was formed, and what caused the various formations.
It was one of the very best things on the Road to Hana-- probably our favorite. It is about 100 time better than the Thurston Lava Tube over on the Big Island (Volcano National Park.) It is much longer, has a much, much greater variety of features, and it has exceptionally helful explanations-- all way better than Thurston. I told the man it would be a bargain at twice the price.
Oh, and BTW, there is this very fun maze made out of bushes that you can try if you want right there. It is well done and kind of challenging (but you can always cheat and step over the bushes if you get too lost). I was extremely impressed and thought this was a highlight of the Road to Hana.

We checked out the lava tubes in Hana on our trip. It’s a interesting walk underground for about a quarter mile and then you come back the same way. This thing was huge they give you a flashlight and the tube has handrails but the path is a little rocky so you could twist an ankle if you don’t pay attention. They have signs explaining the different sights you can checkout.

The Hana Lava tubes were a fun and interesting stop on the Road to Hana. It was nice to look at your own pace. The informational placards were helpful along the way.

You might wonder why a lava tube? When else are you ever going to see an enormous tube cut through solid rock by molten lava? It was much cooler than I thought it would be. The check-in was super easy - pay your $15 each, get a flashlight, and get some simple directions. It was minimally difficult to navigate with a few stairs and some uneven ground. The signs along the way pointed out the unique features - stalagmites in a lava tube, one of a kind bugs that live here, and the chocolate colored stalactites. For an added thrill, turn off your lights for absolute darkness. It was a quick but unique 30 min stop on the road to Hana.

Fun & quirky stop along our way! Located at mile marker 31 this off the path attraction is a unique & interesting site to explore. The .5 mile walk inside the lava tube was well maintained & easy to navigate. Hand-rails & informational signs made the trip down easy.

Exploring the lava tube at our own pace was great. The price was a little steep but we really wanted to see a lava tube while on the islands. We missed our opportunity while in Volcano so we were excited to get another chance. The young man at the beginning was very friendly and eager to answer our questions. This is a great stop on your way to/from Hana

Just like kids. Flashlights in hand we went exploring in a cave! This was a highlight of our Maui stay. You self-explore the "cave." Read the signs and understand the coolness factor. Look for the "dinosaur eggs." Turn off your flashlights and experience the darkness. Just like kids.

We made a last- minute decision to pull into this place off the road to Hana. I'm so glad we did! I've been in several caves before, and as one reviewer commented "if you've seen a cave, you've seen this!" I have to disagree. It does require some intellect to appreciate the process to form this tube/cave and understand just how amazing it is! The owner of the property welcomes visitors and has a wealth of information to give. His signs along the path in the tube are also witty with a dry sense of humor, I highly recommend taking the time to read them. The history of the tube itself is fascinating and the adventure was worth every penny. As others have mentioned, it is a $15pp entrance fee, cash only...so come prepared!

side note: My husband and I are both a bit claustrophobic and not in the greatest physical shape. This experience was amazing, we never felt too confined and the physicality of the walk wasn't bad at all.

We really enjoyed exploring this lava tube. The price was a little steep for a family of four ($15pp), but worth the visit. If you've been to other caves with tour guides and hard hats and lots of moving together as a group, this is exactly the opposite. They have you a flashlight and you are on your own to read signs and explore what you want. That isn't for everyone, but we enjoyed it thoroughly!

One final note: I recommend a hat with a brim or some sort of rain gear. You WILL get dripped on along the way in the lava tube.
