My husband and I went on this short walk and enjoyed it very much. It was a rainy but warm day and the trees in fact provided some protection from the rain. And because it is fully a boardwalk, the walking itself was easy and relatively protected i.e. we weren’t walking through mud or puddles etc. The trees were magnificent and the information boards along the walk were informative and helpful to read. This was a delightful little walk.
In terms of access, we drove there from Kaikohe, eventually along Waiare Rd, the last 14 km (approx) of which was dirt/gravel. Despite the rain, the road was in good condition and we’ll graded – we just slowed as we would ordinarily on a gravel road. After we left this area we then travelled along Pungaere Rd, which was bitumen and meant for easier travelling compared with the journey to get there.

Highly recommend this walk. There are two walks. One is the 10 minute board walk around a number of very large Kauri trees, then you can drive about 1.5kms to the Motor Camp to do a 1 hr loop walk. It actually took us about 40 minutes and we were not hurrying. Again some great Kauri trees. Well worth the effort. There are some stunning views over the surrounding district as you drive there and back due to the elevation of the park.

Wonderful experience amongst the giants. Great for pre school aged children. Walk itself is short, but packs a good punch. Road there looks like it’s going to be tar sealed soon. No steps, suitable for prams.

We were originally planning to visit Tāne Mahuta, but that was a bit too much of a drive from our Paihia accommodation so we opted to visit this forest walk instead. We're glad we did too as we've not seen a kauri forest before and we were impressed by the scale of the trees.
Apart from the 3-4km of gravel road to get there, this is a beautiful spot that's an easy walk in a serene setting. Well worth a visit.

We just love a walk in the bush with the natural sunlight filtering through the trees and the birds flying from tree to tree doing their daily thing. This walk was enhanced by the wheelchair friendly board walk which was almost flat. In the centre is a round seat with a table as the centre piece. Sitting there and looking up into the magnificent Kauri trees was amazingly peaceful.
There is plenty of tarseal parking opposite the entrance (on a dusting metal road)

Легкая прогулка по лесу. Везде деревянные настилы. Наслаждаешься ароматом леса. И восхищаешься величием новозеландских деревьев Каури.

I love this short walk through the forest. I do it regularly as Ilive nearby and find it therapeutic.
The towering kauri are magnificent and the peaceful energy of the bush is so relaxing.
Wheelchair accessible boardwalk.
Easy flat walk, so it's no trouble for everyone to do.
Best done when there is no one else there so it's just you and the forest.

a great boardwalk makes this very accessible. Beautiful forest well worth visiting - Pothole gravel road and no cell phone coverage so don't have a puncture like we did!!!! Fabulous locals came to our rescue -

We visited the Forest with a tour that was offered by our cruise line. We had a very interesting guide that took us on the tour as we walked on the boardwalk to view the kauri trees and other vegetation in the area. We were there for about 45 minutes on the tour. If you visit, you don’t need a tour since there are placards along the boardwalk.

We used Bay of Islands Tours Ltd. for a tour that included Kawiti Glowworm Caves, Hundertwasser Toilets, Makana Confections, The Kauri Workshop, Manginangina Kauri Walk and Haruru Falls. (I've reviewed each of those.)

I understand the road to the walk has some part of gravel road (unsealed), may I know which route has the least gravel distance ? Waiare Rd (from northeast of SH10) ? Pungaere Rd from southeast of SH10? Puketi Rd from SH1? Or Waiare Road from SH1?

Answering my own question after visited Puketi Forest, the route with least gravel road is Pungaere Road from State Highway 10, shortly after BP Waipapa. Only the last 4km is gravel road.
