The views were excellent and there was lookout that was very night but we walked up it . There was no snow there on Monday but we wouldn’t have made it to top if there was

Been here a number of times at different parts of the year but this time we went with a sled for kids.
It had been just a cool day coming up the valley, sun shining as we took the road from warburton winding up to Mount Donna Buang. The car parks were full with families anxious to hit the snow. Left the younger ones to climb the fire tower this time, although the view must’ve been spectacular looking down from snow caps to sunny river valley or Melbourne CBD in far off distance.

We visited the summit of Mt. Donna Buang mid-summer. There are some nice walks although I enjoyed the Forest Gallery half-way down the mountain a lot more. It’s a good view from the top of the lookout tower but I think this area would be better during the snow season.

My wife and I drove here to have a short visit, after visiting Warburton. We have not been here before as we chose to go to Mount Buller (many times), Mount Baw Baw and Lake Mountain, in the past for snow trips.
Mount Donna Buang summit is 1250 meters above sea level, offering panoramic views from the viewing tower and bushwalking. In winter, it offers snow play and tobogganing.
The Dandenong Ranges and Cathedral Ranges can be seen from the top of the viewing tower. This tower was recently repainted at the time of our visit.
The temperature was 11 degrees in the mid afternoon with a wind chill factor making it seem colder. We were glad we brought a jacket.
The car parking area is relatively small and it would get congested during weekends in winter.

While in Warburton recently we noticed what looked like snow clouds above Mt Donna Buang. A quick check of the weather app indicated it was snowing up there so we head up around 2pm. It was the first time our 10 yo had ever seen snow and the kids had a ball making snowmen and going up the lookout tower. Next time we will come prepared in waterproof ski gear and bring a toboggan. Highly recommend for good quality, free snow play!

On top of Mt Donna Buang is always a disappointment and apart from the scenery on the way up and down the is not a lot to say about the top of the mountain as the views at ground level are not that great. There is an observation tower which is quite ugly and the car park was littered with trash and the area around the tower not at all attractive. The positive was the sigting of two Lyrebirds, one willing to allow a close-up.

I have been driving for 30 years and this was the scariest drive I've ever had. It was a rainy summers day yesterday and after seeing the lookout tower I wanted to get to Healesville and there was a sign pointing to Healesville C505 so I took that route. It started off okay, but then the road got really narrow and stoney almost like gravel road, and visibility was really really poor from the mists and rain, I couldn't see all around just right in front of me. It was like this for ages, I wanted to turn to back but the road was too narrow to turn anywhere. Then I almost crashed as a car heading towards me suddenly appeared around the corner. The road was too narrow for either of us to pass so the other car starting backing up the windy narrow paths until we got to a corner turn which had more space for my car to squeeze past - I thought my car would topple off the cliff it was that close to the edge. For 33km that was the only car I past which was both a relief given the narrow roads couldn't fit 2 cars and also scary as there were was no one around if there was an accident. They should have put a sign up that roads are narrow and dangerous, and turning back is not an option once you start. If I had knew the roads were like that I would have never taken this route. Oh, and my mobile phone lost reception as well so I would not have been able to call anyone if my car fell off the cliff.

A beautiful tree lined, steep windy road leads to the summit. This provides a challenging ride for cyclists from Warburton or you can try the gravel road option from Don Road. Both routes are scenic & rewarding. At the summit there are public toilets & a viewing platform to climb with the reward of 360 degree views. The descent is fast & exhilarating with the Rainforest Gallery half way down.

Accessible by car, bicycle or foot, Mt Donna Buang features pristine rain forest with plenty of tree ferns. If you are lucky, or early, you should spot a lyrebird.

It depends on weather but you can check snow report for Mt Donna Buang before you go. There is usually snow around June- July. Hope it helps.

Where is the closest place to Mount Donna Buang to hire chains

According to the info site, the closest would be Ajay’s in Heathmont, which is not that near. However, chains are rarely needed in Mt. Donna Buang due to its low altitude.

Hi, can I check if snow boots is needed?

Melbourne, Australia231 contributi
It snows just a few times each year at Mt. Donna Buang. When there’s snow, you can use snow boots or just hiking boots or any boot that has reasonable grip.
Hi Nikki,
just checking when did you visit Mount Donna Buang? We'll be visiting Grampians, Daylesford follow by Mount Donna Buang or Mount Buller in mid June. Wondering if any of these places will snow. :)
Cheers,
Gisselle.

Mt. Donna buang is quite low. It will snow from time to time but you can’t rely on it.
Mt. Buller is a proper ski resort. From about 8th June it’ll be open for skiing and if there’s no natural snow, there will be man made snow.
In July and August there’s usually 0.5-1m natural snow. Hope this helps
Is there rental for thick clothes in Mt Donna Buang?
Is is safe to drive a car or 4wd is a must specifically in mid June?

1). No.
2). Most of the time a normal car would be ok as there isn’t much snow there. Depending on conditions, you may be required to carry chains. Look up places where you can hire them, should be one in Warburton or several other places along the way.
