Lovely place to visit and explore, beautiful view and history to see, nearby is an memorial at the spot where one of Australia’s Prime Minister’s Harold Holt went for a swim and disappeared, you can either catch the bus that goes up and the area all day long or walk if you’re up to

The Fort is located within the Point Nepean National Park and is a nice easy 1hr stroll from the last car park. For those wanting there is also a shuttle bus that will take you to the Fort.
The walk has lots of smaller walks running off and there is heaps to see.
The Forts are a wonderful step back into our history and are full of information boards teaching and showing you what the site was used for over the years.
You can easily spend a day at the park and still not explore all it has to offer.
You can also bring your bikes!

We recently walked out to Point Nepean to visit Fort Nepean.
A very historic place to visit out on the end of the peninsula with lovely scenery on the way, the ocean and bay views are great, at this point the land is very narrow, one side the rough ocean the other the calm waters of the bay.
The old military fort is a amazing place , built to protect Port Phillip Bay construction started in 1882.
One wonders what hard work that would have been in those days , built with concrete and bricks the gun placements and underground tunnels were a real treat to walk through . After World War 11, the soldiers were removed and the buildings and fortifications declared redundant. This area was closed to the public until it became a National Park under the control of the Victorian Government in 1988.
We are now lucky to be able to enjoy the nature of the place and learn it’s history.
We really recommend walking to the Fort , you can only drive as far as Gunners Cottage where you can leave your vehicle. You can catch a shuttle bus from the Quarantine Station to the Fort at a cost if you wish not to walk .

Walked from quarantine car park to Fort and back- about 6-7kms. Some hills to climb but can make it a leisurely day. Fort at the end of the walk is very interesting with lots of information and incredible views!! There is shuttle to and back-can’t remember the cost

We had an exciting walk to the Fort Nepean where we were able to relive the life in a historical fortress. The roadway to the fort itself was very scenic and even though around 3.8 km we never felt tired. Changing scene kept every step exciting and there were so much of areas to explore. Visit to Fort Nepean was very educational and it was a rare opportunity to see how those who occupied it, lived and worked in crammed space as most cubicles were quite small. Felt impressed by the information that was provided to the visitors through descriptive boards.

One of my most favourite places to visit in Victoria. I don't know what it is about this place. I just love it. The views are stunning, the history of it interesting. It is also considered the thinnest point of Victoria.
If you take the shuttle bus up the driver tells you the history of this place as well as some interesting facts :-)
Enjoy!

My wife and I walked 2.8 km to this place, after parking our car at Gunner's Cottage. Cars are not allowed beyond that point. During the walk, we visited the various attractions along the track. After our visit here, we walked back to our car. Although there is a shuttle bus for a fee, we chose to walk to enjoy the scenery and the physical exercise. We had packed our lunch and plenty of water.

Fort Nepean, Point Nepean National Park, Portsea: "Overlooking stunning views of Port Phillip and Bass Strait, Fort Nepean comprises a series of military fortifications dating back to the 1880s. Explore a significant part of Australia's military heritage . . . Above ground and below ground . . . find gun emplacements, tunnels, ammunition magazines, an engine house and even a bomb-proof room."

We explored every part of Fort Nepean.

What a grand experience this was to visit Fort Nepean. It is hard to believe that you can wander amongst old forts complete with a myriad of underground tunnels and sound effects - and all for free entry. The only 'cost' is a walk of 2.5 kms from the carpark after the entry into the Port Nepean National Park .... and it is an easy walk too!

I believe this is one of the best free experiences in Victoria and certainly the best in southern Victoria! It is also so rare these days to visit well-preserved historic sites like this. Give yourself a few hours as you don't want to rush a trip through this fascinating place. You should note that there are no facilities (like cafe or shops) there, so take your own food and water. But there are toilets.

Lovely walk, minus the biting flies, but the fort and tunnels were great with lots of information and history to take in.
