A longish walk best to start early, starts from a trust car park £6 all day so not too bad, toilets in the car park. Walk along a driveway type road well signposted, then off to the right into the woods, steps all the way up through the woods which includes a waterfall. As you come out of the woods follow the clear path. The path splits up one going to the left the other to the right, follow the left path, which takes you up and around to the lake. From the lake you can clearly see the path leading up to the Cadair Idris. The path all the way around the top is fairly easy to follow in good visibility and in my view should only be done in these conditions. Also be aware of wind conditions, it can get very windy at the top if too strong can become dangerous. Only one bit that needs a bit of care around 3/4 of the way around you come across a rocky section, just keep to the middle and stay away from the edges. After that the path starts to descend downhill over a grassy plateau, look to the left you have great views including the sea, to the right is the Cadair Idris lake. Two choices on the grassy plateau keep high across it until you come to a fence & stile or drop down to the lower older path which is clearly marked and comes to the same fence lower down and another stile to climb over. If you go for the higher stile go over it turn right and follow the fence down. Soon becomes rock steps on a clear to follow path. Rock steps all the way down now which can take it out on your legs so trekking poles can help. You then come to where the path split on the way up. Go left back to the woods. Really lovely walk but don’t underestimate the physical nature of this walk the stone step descent can have its toll on your leg’s & knees. My advice is only do this trek on a good clear day, if strong winds or low cloud avoid, enjoy and stay safe

We have a combined age of around 130 and wanted to tick Cadair Idris off the bucket list . We are reasonably fit for our ages . We prepared well and had enough water and food an OS Map compass and mobile phone and waterproofs in our packs . Sturdy boots are a must . Sticks were useful . This is a fantastic adventure but we found the steep initial ascent over boulder steps for around 2k on the Minffordd path to be challenging in 26 degree heat . We were sensible and rested frequently but around 2/3 rds up started to feel the effects of heat . A rest behind an outcrop - as shade there was scarce once past the lower wooded area - a banana and some Kendall mint cake with water did the trick and we got to Llyn Cau after a couple of hours taking it slowly . The Llyn is a glorious place in itself . Had we been younger and the temperature cooler we would have attempted the summit . But our sensible heads dictated we try that another day . We were delighted to have done part of the trail - do not underestimate the initial climb if you go this way - it’s tough even for younger folk . The rewards if you make it are spectacular !! We had a glorious day and Llyn Cau was truly stunning in the sunlight . We met others who completed the full circuit and without a doubt agreed this is a bucket list adventure !
Top tip don’t wait til you’re over 70 to do it unless you’re super fit !
Or take the longer more gradual trails but definitely do it safely .
We met a chap struggling down the steps with a twisted ankle - wear good boots !
We saw less than twenty people all day so far less busy than Snowdon .
Very scenic and enjoyable nonetheless.
We have climbed Pen y Fan steep Storey arms route ( not the “Motorway” ) easily at 65 yrs compared to this .
Treat Cadair Idris with respect it’s a magnificent mountain and check the weather .
You won’t be disappointed.
Dol Idris car park is almost 4 miles past Corris - towards Dolgellau . £6 all day - the start of the Minffordd route we took - fair amount of parking but go early to secure at peak times . The cafe was closed when we visited July 24 .

I climbed cadair from the Cross foxes road and up through the crag and joined the Minffordd path , There was a yellow wind warning ⚠️ The Met office weather gave 56mph winds and guesting! This didn't deter me , Once on the broadridge visibility was was down to about 10 meters but I followed the cairns to the shelter on the summit where I rested and cooked some noodles . On the return descent I retraced my footsteps but was unable to find my way ! So I followed a broad path to a fence line and descended to the carpark on the tal y llyn side of the mountain , From there I walked the road back to my car , It was epic in those conditions and I relied on my fitness and determination ! All done it was an amazing experience that left me smiling for days 😊

We went up via the Minnffordd route which was a circular route of circa 7miles.
Is steep for quite a while but incredible views at the top. Very striking scenery.
Car park was £3 for 4hrs of £6 all day - we did the whole route in 3.5hrs but would say all day ticket just incase.
Good toilets at the car park.
Medium difficulty - no scrambling but steep at times and requires good level of fitness. But very rewarded with the views.

Stunning walk! Hard on the legs as it’s lots of steps and uneven stones pretty much all the way up. You need a decent level of fitness. We found the descent harder as our legs were tired. Took about 6.5 hours with plenty of photos and snack breaks. Go prepared for weather as can get cold on the top. There is a mini summit before the actual summit that’s actually much further away so don’t be fooled by that!

Did the trekking of Cadair Idris,Mynydd Moel, Craig Lwyd and Talyllyn Circular. Anti clockwise would be more easy as loose rock all around that rush downhill would be more hard & easy sprained the ankle/broke legs(i saw 2 people hurt the legs and helicopter when i came back camp site). The view of lake and Cadair Idris Summit so stunning. So far managable and more easiler than tryfan & crib goch.

We were a bit restricted on when we could get a free weekend, so ended up climbing Cadair Idris during a yellow wind warning. As it turned out there were a few sunny patches between the showers so I did manage to get a couple of nice pics for the album. We went up the Eastern route, which involved a bit of scree scrambling. They are in the process of rebuilding the path, but this was far from finished and most of the route involved walking up what had turned into a mountain stream. At the top of Mynyfd Moel visibility was down to a few metres so we had to use the GPS to stay on the path across to the summit, which was quite rocky and not especially easy to manage in high winds. It didn't help that my boots fell apart at this point too. I'd recommend testing your boots before doing this hike, as mine had been in the garage over the recent hot spell which had affected the glue. We came down via the Minffordd path and there were nice views of the lake through the clouds. I managed the descent with soles held on only by bootlaces, so it isn't especially difficult. The benefit of doing this hike in the rain was we didn't see anyone else until we got down to the lake. I wouldn't take my kids up there, but for adults that enjoy a challenge I'd recommend going when the weather is bad, just make sure you're prepared and have tested your kit recently.

We had a fabulous walk taking the hard / strenuous path with 10 year old 14 year old, a small dog and grandparents (fit/active). It’s a steep walk for almost the entire time, but it’s much shorter than the longer circular route. Also this route takes you through lovely waterfalls and rivers with beautiful purple heathers. The lake at the top is beautiful and worth a swim if you’re brave, it’s cold! (we paddled, lots swimming). We did the false summit which is almost as high as the summit and well worth the extra climb for the view over the lake and over the other side the view over the valley. Coming down is hard on your knees so keep that in mind. It’s slippery under foot and decent walking shoes or sturdy trainers needed. It was a warm day but it’s chilly at the top. The cafe had a good selection and was a very welcome site when we got back to the car park. The whole thing took us about 4 hours, but that included stopping for an hours long picnic and paddling. Enjoy!

Parked up at nearby car park (£6 all day) and crossed the road to start our hike, on the Pony Path. It was overcast and we could see the peak was surrounded in mist, which was unexpected as the forecast was for hot and sunny! I am 57 and walk an average of 10,000 steps a day, in hilly Shropshire so reasonabley fit. This hike was still challenging for me and difficult underfoot at times, due to scree and rocks to scramble at the end! Really enjoyed the whole experience though and we did get some stunning views coming down and saw the lake, through the mist! I went with my 31 year old son who is very fit and found it easy! Sensible walking shoes and light layers of clothing are a must, as it does get chilly at the top. Take plenty of water and snacks and I used walking poles which definitely helped my knees on the way down and kept me from slipping over. I've wanted to do this walk for a ling time and it didn't disappoint. Allow 5 hours to include lunch at the summit and for stopping to take photos (and to catch your breath)

The walk, the views, 5 stars. I'm only writing this review to prewarn others to ensure you have plenty of water. The chap running the cafe pointed to a sign informing walkers that the cafe won't supply tap water to anyone. And there are no bins so make sure you take a bag for rubbish.

Obviously you can camp overnight if you want to, but has anyone ever slept in the stone shelter?

Hi, what's the current parking charge at Dol Idris car park at the bottom of the Minfordd Path? Is it possible to park for free nearby? Thanks

As a matter of interest how old was the kids? have a 6 year old boy who wants to come, doing the pony path. Think this is manageable?
Thanks in advance.

Our daughter was 7 at the time. It is a rough walk if you do the full circuit up to the peak, but very well worth it. Make sure you are prepared and have decent shoes.

What’s the easiest route and how long and a not too slow pace. I have done snowdon but will be taking my mum who is fit at 69. But I want us to enjoy the experience and not struggle at all. Is the easy route scenic? Will we see the lake at the top from the east route?

Hi would the pony path be suitable to take a very active retriever with us?
Scritta in data 6 agosto 2018
Yes! Our husky and staffie found it fine. As with any dog - I wouldn’t go up in very hot weather.

We have a 3 & 5 year old. Is this too hard for a family trip out?
Scritta in data 5 agosto 2018
Up to the lake it isn’t too bad, and most likely doable. But personally I wouldn’t take toddlers/younger children up to the top. As parents it’s as safe as you want to make it, but some parts are steep, and once you get past the lake it really is only up. No diversions. And very rocky in places. There is at the bottom a lovely little cafe, and plenty to see that’s reachable with young ones x

Hello. Is it really hard to walk the mointain via Pony Path during rainy day? Maybe some equipment could help? Already booked and planned a holiday in next month, would be a shame if rain ruined it.. Thanks for help!
Scritta in data 19 giugno 2018
Hiya! No not particularly, you would want to take it slower and yes a walking stick as an aid might help. If you are a regular mountain walker I’m sure you’ll have no problem. It is very open once you get out of the forest and around the corner. Once passing the lake, and onto the ridge you can be very exposed. Hope that helps x

I am not great with heights (sheer drops to be specific only feet away from where I stand), however I am determined to climb/walk up some of Wales loveliest hills- will Cadair Idris be beyond me? not sure I'd make it up easiest path of
Snowdon- I've seen YouTube footage!!
