We live in Portland and view this cemetery as a regional treasure. The Friends of Lone Fir offer 3 different fascinating tours. One is historic, one is of the North area, one is of the South area. My husband and I have taken all three of them and wish they would develop even more tours, as there is so much history and so many stories in this cemetery!

This old cemetery sits in the midst of a residential neighborhood on the east side of Portland. It contains hundreds of graves and crypts of long-ago residents and civic leaders. It also is a park-like setting, with tall trees, large grassy area, and places to sit. It's a place visitors shouldn't miss, especially after spending time in more crowded parts of the city.

Many of Portland’s founding families are still entombed here and it is a fascinating walk through early Portland for any cemetary buff.

Peaceful and beautiful during autumn colors especially in October! Lot of interesting kinds of tombstones. Good place to do a nature walk.

If you live or are planning a trip to Portlnd, Or. be sure to visit the Lone Fir Cemetery. Enhance your visit with a guided tour walk. Visit the web site for all they have to offer. Interesting stories of early Portland will be told. If your visit does not match up with the tour dates it is still a very nice walk on your own, but no dogs allowed.

Lone Fir isn't a Laurel Hill or a Green-Wood. No ostentatious monuments to capitalism and industry here. It's a very DIY place that really captures over a century of people coming from the ends of the earth to make a home in Portland. There are inscriptions in German and Ukrainian and Chinese, humble memorials to firefighters and Civil War soldiers, even a little gravestone decorated with bathroom tiles and a simple monument populated by many small animal figurines.

I spent a good two hours here, strolling the paths. It's not a garden cemetery and one generally should be interested in the lives of ordinary people rather than fantastic landscaping or gigantic obelisks and angels, etc. I'm sorry I missed the Saturday tour as I undoubtedly would have learned a good deal more.

Lone Fir certainly isn't for every visitor, but I do recommend it for those interested in pioneer and immigration history. There are paved pathways, so it is accessible to some degree by visitors who use wheelchairs.

My friend was thinking of divorce, and so she showed up at my house unexpectedly and we went for a walk to discuss the problems she was experiencing, ending up here at this location. It was a good place to walk and not have to deal with traffic or interruption. As well, we've gone to "Shakespeare in the Park" performances here (Saw Hamlet here ... the play wasn't very good, but the setting was perfect!) The tombstones and landscaping aren't top notch (compared to other cemeteries I've been to), but you can't beat it for a quiet walk away from the city streets.

Not the rich people cemetery. Asa Lovejoy's grave, so the earliest pioneers are here. There is a memorial to Civil War veterans. On the first Saturday, of the month, at 10am if a walk thru the cemetery by a volunteer docent and on the second Saturday, of the month is a tour by a docent on the historical figure. Both tours are by the friends of Lone Fir and are free, but a 10$ donation is recommended. Great parking and wonderfully maintained.

This cemetery offers an opportunity for an interesting walk in the city. You can download a guide to the graves which gives you a bit of a lesson on the famous citizens of young Portland. What is most interesting in this park-like place is the large variety of trees. After your walk, head a block south to Belmont Ave where you find restaurants catering to any taste.

Lone Fir Pioneer Cemetery is located in SE Portland between Stark St and Morrison St and SE 26th and SE 20th. It is the final resting place for many of Portland's city founders, pioneers, Chinese immigrants and patients from the Oregon Hospital for the insane. There are also designated places nested amongst the trees for Soldiers and Fire Fighters.

I am a native Portlander and it took 50+ years to finally make my way through the gates into this treasure trove of Portland history.

Emmor Stephen Sr was the first to be buried here in 1846 when the land was still public. Emmor traveled from the Midwest (Illinois) with his second wife along with many his/their children to settle in the Oregon Country. His headstone shows he and his wife together but she actually died on the trail. The headstone can be found in the NW corner.

City founders James C. Hawthorne who opened the Oregon Hospital for the Insane, and Asa Lovejoy a City founder (who lost the coin toss to Francis Pettygrove to name the city Portland [not Boston]) are both buried here. As is George F. Bottler who established the second brewery and named it 'City Brewing'. Henry Weinhard bought his shares in 1864 and went on to create the largest brewery in the PNW.

The Macleary mausoleum was built in 1877 and in its glory must have been quite a sight. It is now fenced off due to decay of the sandstone structure and vandalism.

The SW corner of the cemetery is rich with history as it held many of the Chinese immigrants that helped remove tree stumps for the railroads and just East of these sites many from the The Oregon Hospital are buried. In the 1940's many of the remains of immigrants were returns to China. This land was built over and later building torn down. There is City money earmarked for this area but funds are still lacking.

Lone Fir Pioneer Cemetery is now a historical site in the City of Portland. Portland is a city that is growing so fast and if we do not hold onto our roots, research, document, capture and honor the history, it will be lost for our future generations that will call Portland home.
