The Wildwood Trail runs through Portland's Forest Park complex, easily accessible from various access points in the heart of the city. One can access it by bus or driving into the Forest Park area and parking at one of many parking area of different sizes, or walking in from some trail access points in neighbourhoods.

This trail has easier parts and more strenuous parts but at no point is it particularly strenuous. This and its with hits length through the park make it great for many people and for those who want something vigorous as well as those who want a moderate hike in the woods, long or short.

What a great hike & it is right in our back yard.

Pretty busy trail with lots of people running, walking & hiking.

Anyone that is up for a challenge, I recommend getting up early & doing the whole thing.

If you trail run then this is an amazing trail. We run less manicured and more remote trails in Eugene, but this was a very cool city trail for us. Loved the hills. Go in the cool morning then power up with brunch at Hunny Milk.

Having never been to the northwest, and only having one free afternoon, this was a no brainier for me. Hiked with friends from the rose garden up to Pittock mansion. Entering the trail was tricky, but it is fairly well maybe once you're on it. Gorgeous hike through the evergreens. Not strenuous, but not a stroll through the park either. Plan to finish before it gets dark (we got caught with the sun going down and had to hike back along the road)

This trail can be reached via multiple connection points around the Eastern sections of The Hills. I recommend connecting via Tunnel Trail, since this creates a nice 2.5 mile loop for quick adventures. The ascent and descent are relatively comfortable, with difficulty only coming from weather related mud or crowds. I would definitely recommend hiking to the Pittock Mansion lookout with a picnic on a sunny, clear day. Moreover, this trail has a good distribution of Portland flora, so whether you're visiting or touring around your backyard, you'll be impressed!

The Wildwood Trail is a wonderful alternative to your gym's aerobic machines and what I call "street walking" or running/jogging through neighborhoods. I generally do some form of physical activity 4 or 5 days a week, in part to train for Olympic distance triathlons. My typical run/hike training distance is 6.2 miles (to match the Olympic Tri running distance) and am always looking for scenic options to make the miles go by without too much tedium. Let's face it: if you run where the cars are, you will be always avoiding people turning into you, not checking for peds at crosswalks, etc. Or you will be just getting your stride and then have to wait at a crosswalk for what seems like 5 minutes. Very boring. As for treadmills, well, unless there is a foot of snow and a 30 mph wind blowing, I can't spend more than 10 minutes on one of those things. Exercise should be relaxing on a lot of levels. Good for your heart, good for your soul, and truly a time to re-create your connections with what matters. Wildwood is almost always the best option if you can take the time to get to a trailhead, (and to find the trailhead!) and you are smart enough to figure out which way to go at each fork in the trail! Best to take some iPhone pics of your route (from the maps) so that if you hit spots with no cell service you still know which turn to take. This is a huge trail system, so getting lost is easy. In the winter, as other reviews have mentioned, the tree canopy somehow protects the trail from becoming impassable -- but you should have mud-worthy hiking boots, and avoid going "off trail" to bypass an especially muddy stretch. The trailheads are often very secluded and reports of car break-ins are numerous. This is NOT a place to leave ANY valuables in your car. Thieves have figured out how easy it is to break a window in a semi-remote parking area (near the Wildwood) and get away clean. Take a break from the gym, clean out all of your expensive "stuff" from your car, and hike or run the Wildwood -- it is a Portland experience!

We were planning to hike Macleay Trail, but it was closed due to construction, so we opted to take Wildwood Trail as an alternative. It was a little hard to find from the streets of the neighborhood where we started, but we were able to locate it after a couple of false turns (others we met along the way were also confused). We were on Aspen Avenue, where there is a very tall stairway that looks like it might be private property, but which is actually public access to Aspen Trail. Aspen trail, also quite steep in that section, leads to Wildwood Trail. From there, we hiked to Holman Lane, back to the street where we had parked near the entrance to Mcleay. The trail is narrow but not difficult, but much of it is steep. Fortunately, it is nearly all in shade, so I wasn't worried about sunscreen. There are a lot of bugs, so sensitive people might want insect repellent. The forest is quite lovely.

My daughter and I did the 2.5 miles from Lower Macleay up to Pittock mansion. It's hard to believe that a park this green and dense exists right in downtown Portland. There were some steep climbs and the persistent uphill really tested our legs. It's a popular hike and the trail is well populated. The payoff at the end is a fantastic view of Portland from the Pittock mansion grounds.

The Wildwood is a wonderful 30-mile urban trail. I have hiked its length annually (in short stretches). It is relatively secluded, but yet popular. Except for the last 3 miles, it is possible to hike sections in loops which saves out-and-back hikes. Although the last section involving the BPA and Newtown Road sections is steep, and the gravel on the BPA is quite slick).

The beginning from the zoo through Lower Macleay, the most popular (and the most hilly), is heavily used and rarely muddy after months of typical Portland Winter. Staring at Audubon and any of the subsequent trailheads, one quickly leaves civilization, or at least the appearance thereof.

It also is a great running trail and dog trail. Often dogs are usually on leash, but one finds the occasional "I don't care dog person." While bicyclist are not allowed, occasionally there are teenagers or 20-somethings who delight in tearing up the trail with their mountain bikes.

As noted, except for the furthest reaches, hiking is possible any time of the year. The other benefit, with the exception of the first 7 miles to Cornell Rd, the remaining 23 miles crosses one relatively lightly traveled windy road.
