Walk the path around the lake - about 2 miles. Pretty and peaceful. Updated path areas. Nice view of Mt Hood.

I don’t know if I have seen very many vistas that are more beautiful than the view of Mt. Hood we took in on a beautiful July day. I’m sure it’s not always calm and a perfect temperature like it was when we visited. We enjoyed a hike through the trees and over the dam. Many people had brought their own paddle boards or kayaks, and there were families fishing and swimming. We were disappointed that at 10 am the kayak rental wasn’t available, but to be fair it was a weekday. I have a new favorite peak in the Pacific Northwest after staring at the still somewhat snowy Mt. Hood in her reflection on Trillium Lake. The only thing that would have been better would have been to find some actual trillium flowers to enjoy.

We went on our own without a tour. THe lake is situated beautifully at the base of Mt. Hood and has spectacular views and nice clear water. We were there on a sunny, July 3rd day. The parking area was overcrowded and there were many people unloading and pumping up their SUPs and kayaks in the parking lot so that made things a bit tricky for drivers in addition to all the cars vying for parking spots. There was one stinky porta potty with a very long line and as we hiked around the lake, every picnic spot and possible place to sit by the water was taken. There is also a Kayak rental along the trail. We hiked the perimeter of the lake and it was quite nice. The BOARDWALK HAS BEEN REPLACED and you can walk on it although the trail specifies that it's closed for repair. The signs and trail blazes could have been better but we had a nice relaxed hike. You can't see the volcano on most of the trail because it's wooded, but the trees and wildflowers were nice and the trail is mostly flat.

This is a fairly average lake in the woods. It has a dam presumably to increase and control the depth. There is limited shore space and it is all well used for picknics and boating with camping in the woods. It is nothing like the advert picture. The main feature is the view of Hood Mountain which would be spectacular in good weather. Personally I would not bother going if there is cloud obscuring the mountain, there are far more attractive places.

Ever since we saw pictures from friends, we've been wanting to visit this lake. We waited for the perfect sunny, no wind, weekday to visit. We arrived shortly after 9 AM, parked by the dam parking lot. There were only 4 other cars and a few fishermen. So serene.
Our recommendation is to arrive as early as possible. The calm lake made photographing Mt Hood and reflection very easy. We walked on the loop trail towards the day use picnic area, and then on to the campground. The trail is well maintained with nice boardwalk sections. The most photogenic section is in this area.
There is a viewing platform that goes out in the lake, it is a great people photograph spot. With Mt Hood in the backdrop. When we visited, the campground was not open. We can only imagine once the campground is open, or into the summer peak season, this lake is probably filled with kayaks, float boats, paddle boats. It would be a great contrast to what we experienced.
Fishermen were catching nice size lake trout we were there. It was a beautiful way to spend a morning. Absolutely gorgeous.

Trillium lake is very beautiful but holy hannah was it busy in July! We are from BC and had never seen a mountain lake this busy, with so many floaties, paddle boards, etc...

I was there, strictly, to photograph the reflection of Mt. Hood. Great location and very popular with locals as well as photographers. Smoke from fires created some problems but was able to control that with post processing. Wind can be a problem, if you are photographing.

Wonderful place to visit to and catch the reflection of Mt. Hood. There is a walking trail around the lake, which is closed at certain point right now. You can drive right to this spot at the boat launch to capture the reflection. There are picnic tables in the day use area.

Taking my senior MIL law to Oregon this summer and would really like to see this. How accessible is the area? She is not disabled but has limited mobility due to hips and knee replacements. I want to see as much as possible in nature, but must keep in mind her limits. Thanks!

It is very accessible. There are flat roads and flat paths leading right to the lake and majestic views. Day use parking area is mere feet from lake. Bathrooms are the only real issue - they are more or less just outhouses.

My friend and i will stay at the Timberline Lodge and planned to visit the Trillium Lake the next day. Any public transportation available to travel from the Timberline Lodge to the Trillium Lake?
Nicholas Steven
Portland, OR13 contributi
Not that I know of, especially in the winter time. They close the main gates there (at Trillium) in the winter, so even when you drive yourself, you have to park beyond the gates and then snowshoe in. The road beyond the gate is usually buried in snow, and the lake will also be frozen and covered in snow. If you have transportation and don’t mind hiking in, it makes for a great winter snowshoe loop :)
I see the open season for camping at Trillium Lake ends 9/30/2018. Does this mean the campground is closed or you just can't make reservations? If it is open to first come first serve are there envelopes to use like the day use for payment or is the camp hosts still there?

I am sorry. I don't have an answer. I suggest you contact the closes C of C or Visitor information for your answer.
Would you be able to rent a space for an outdoor wedding? My fiance and I are looking into locations near Mt Hood, and Trillium looks gorgeous.

You should contact the Forest Service regarding reserving the amphitheater, or discuss with them such a special use of a public locale without impeding use by other citizens.
Relative info can be found by entering “us forest service, trillium lake” in a search engine (this site won’t allow my entering links or I would). tel:(503)668-1700

Can you paddle board on the lake?
Hafcanadian
Clackamas, OR75 contributi
Yes. You will share the lake with non-motorized devices, maybe kids and swimmers near shore, fishermen around and on the lake and the handicapped dock, and Mt. Hood dominating. The lake is not large and I have never seen rough water on it, but stormy weather is predicted so beware. It is a popular place and unfortunately can get too busy for my liking these days, but then I remember it 40+ years ago.

Is the road to the Trillium lake open to go by car now? (was closed in early May due to snow.)

Yes, especially after the recent spate of unusually warm weather I’d expect the road into the lake to be navigable.
