After visiting the Thomas Edison Birthplace Museum the Milan Historical Museum is practically next door. It would be easy to capitalize on the traffic from the Edison Museum and not offer much, but the folks at the Milan Historical Museum offer an excellent small town museum full of history of the area. Spread across several building the history includes a few items from Edison history as well as more about the town and overall area.

Multiple buildings with lots of interesting History related items to see. Tour guide was informative and patient with us and the kids. There are some neat little interactive stations for kids to play around with as well. Nice off the beaten path visit.

The grounds of this multi building museum complex are very well kept. The volunteers are pleasant. There are clean restrooms and a cute little gift shop. I really enjoyed just meandering through each building and learning about Milan’s history!

Milan is a quiet, quaint town with a rich history that is well preserved and expertly showcased in this wonderful "mini-campus" located just off the town square. It is a peaceful shady place to spend wandering through the 3 homes, the General Store, the art museum and a few other interesting buildings. It's all air-conditioned. The General Store has snacks and clean restrooms. The displays are expertly curated and well maintained. The buildings are well restored and immaculately kept. One house contains a huge private doll collection, another houses all glass displays (Steuben, Tiffany, Lalique, etc) and has been recently redone. Next to the houses is a is a stunningly beautiful Art Museum, showcasing the private collection of a local couple who traveled the world and donated their entire collection and the beautiful building to display them. It contains artworks, furniture, glassware, pottery, textiles and much much more.
I would recommend you plan to spend the day here on Milan - 3 or 4 hours at the historical society campus, an hour or 2 at the Thomas Edison Birthplace and Museum, a visit to the amazing public library and lunch at one of the quaint locally owned restaurants on the square. This is all within a 4-5 block radius, so it is all easily walkable. Walkers and wheelchairs can easily navigate the grounds and several of the buildings, but handi-cap access in the historic houses is a little more limited.

Came to town to visit the Edison home, and took this in on a whim. We have visited many small-town museums, but this is one of the finest we've seen! Congratulations to this community for supporting and maintaining such a wonderful resource. Milan is what one pictures when imagining an idyllic Midwest village.

You won't spend a lot of time here but the Museum is well done. Milan is a great little town for a day trip for senior citizens or folks without very young children. Lots of little shops, antiques, a great pizza place, and good tofts ice cream at the local drive thu. Sit and enjoy your ice cream in the town square gazebo.

When we bought our tickets and started the tour we thought that this would be the typical "here's the blacksmith shop and here's where the So-and-So family lived. But, wow the art collection, the glass collection, and some of the oddities (e.g., an assortment of cast iron mechanical banks, including the famous Tammy Hall bank) were amazing, and completely unexpected in this little village. If you're in town to visit the Edison birthplace make sure you take this in, too. One suggestion: after buying tickets and checking out the farm implements and blacksmith building, start with the local history building. Save the glass and Newton Arts buildings for last, as those are the most spectacular parts. A true hidden gem!

Accidentally discovered this gem. Several different buildings, some historical, with different displays. Was amazed but the 300 old dolls, many wearing period clothing. The Galpin Gallery in the old doctor's house has an amazing collection of art glass, including some glow in the dark glass. The Newton gallery building has amazing old stuff collected by a couple who lived abroad. The blacksmith shop and general store would be a hit with children. It was not crowded at all and a pleasure to visit.
