Definitely not worth the $40 entrance fee. The owners have done nothing there for at least 10 years. Very rough roads for 2 wheel drive. No toilet facilities. Poor and broken signs. No picnic facilities. Some good views but that is about all!

Visitors should be warned of what is to come by the derelict building at the entrance gate. To say the roads were poorly maintained is inaccurate; they were not maintained, being challenging for 4 wheel drives and treacherous for 2 wheel drives. The “safety” fence at Cape Carnot caves was dangerous and in places damaged, marked with disintegrating “safety” tape . The infrastructure to get down to the swimming hole was rusted and too dangerous to negotiate. The signage into the park was insufficient. The signage within the park was rustic and information at each spot non-existent. A printed map guiding the visitor through the park and giving local information would be beneficial - it all seemed very random. (Eg : Why is it called Whalers Way?) At the defunct coach stop there was a large concrete slab with rusted fixings sticking up suggesting there had once been some kind of infrastructure in place apart from the existing couple of picnic tables, which had ridiculously high tables attached to low seats. The toilets at the coach stop were catastrophically disgusting (I have no idea and don’t even want to think about what that black stuff oozing over the cubicle floor might have been.) The scenery was beautiful but not unique to the park.
All in all, visitors deserve better for their $40/car entrance fee.

A wonderful natural attraction, only a short drive from Port Lincoln.
Access to the rugged coastal scenery is via dirt roads. Some roads are wide and smooth, where others are rough and rocky. Use care on the many blind crests.
Many of the views are from unprotected cliff tops, so use care when approaching the edges. Children require close supervision.
A permit is required to enter Whalers Way. This can be bought online, or at the Port Lincoln Information Centre.
When you buy your permit, you will be provided with a code to access the key lock box (at the gate).
A must do. While most locations are accessible by 2WD vehicle, 4WD is recommended further south, or in wet weather.

There are virtually no coastal views from the dirt road once you pass through the gate. The sights are all a walk from pull offs. The pull offs are too often very rough or very sandy without a turning circle. So it is all difficult in a 2WD.
Views from the National Parks are better with easier access and far better maps.

The road is fairly good only questionable in a handful of places. As long as your not driving a Prius you shouldn't have any troubles. However we didn't enter Redbank due to it looking quite sandy and wouldn't trust our vans traction for that.
Definitely would recommend this place even considering the high price. Watching the seals was a major highlight! And we basically had the place to ourselves :)
I'd Be careful at Cape Carnot, 6 people have unfortunately lost there lives at that spot and no fencing or updated signage to be seen.

The Whalers Way is an unsealed road on private land, giving access to some amazing coastline on the southern shore of the Eyre Peninsula. There is a charge for entrance, payable at the Port Lincoln visitor centre. This provides a key code for the locked entrance gate. The road is mostly fine for two-wheel drive vehicles (providing they have good ground clearance), but the north-western section to Red Banks is probably better left to 4WDs. There are no facilities other than parking, a rather bare picnic area, and some walking tracks / access steps. The nearest toilets are in a public picnic area just before the gate. It takes about 2-3 hours to travel the full length and return, given all the points of interest along the way.

Fabulous views and just so scenic photos don’t do it justice. Well worth a visit. Call in at the visitor information to get a pass and key code.

Whalers Way is on privately owned land on the Eyre Peninsula in Australia. Entrance to the area is time- and permit-controlled. There is a launch complex on the property and were asked not to take photos of that area. The views of the cliffs from here are spectacular. I would suggest booking a tour to come here.

Are dogs allowed in Whalers Way? We are keen to do the walk with our dog. Happy to keep her on a leash. Thanks

Hi Jane,
Yes, we took our two dogs out with us to Whalers way. They must stay on lead at all times as requested by the owners, but once you see the coastline you'll understand why...
Thanks,
J

Where can I get a pass and key as the information centre don't have any. Thank you
Scritta in data 8 luglio 2015
You can get the pass key at the little kiosk thing at the gate. However, th permit needs to be collected from the tourist info centre. If they don't have any, they will be able to advise where to get them from.
