Stopped here to see Linville Falls and was surprised to see how busy the hiking trail was on a Tuesday morning. Despite the crowd we hiked to all 3 viewing areas with our favorite being the second. The hike to the top of the waterfall is easy but doesn't let you see the entire Falls. The other two views have lots of stairs and are a little more strenuous but are way better and you get to see all of the Falls. There are other hiking trails in the park but we were only there to see the waterfall. Parking and admission is free (didn't see anywhere to pay or any signs saying we needed to) but we stopped in the visitor center and bought a few souvenirs. It was a nice way to spend a couple of hours but you will work up a sweat so bring plenty of water....and maybe even a snack.

The day started out foggy and rainy. Everyone was grumpy. Lunch was a bust. It wasn’t looking good. I insisted we visit the falls since the sun finally showed up and we begrudgingly drove up the parkway. Hard to stay grumpy with that much scenery. The visitor’s center looked packed but there was plenty of parking. The bathrooms were a little grimy but there were quite a few people there. We grabbed a map and hit the trail. The 16 year old was not interested in a hard hike and this place was perfect. The trail was easy and wide and the overlooks were cool enough to garner some conversation. The falls are actually pretty neat. Smaller than I thought and smaller than the photos make you believe but still cool. It was a great day in the end, thanks to the hike. Just enough to get your blood flowing but not too much to turn off the teenager. We will remember the trip for a long time and have happy memories of a day that could have gone wrong.

I've been here numerous times as it's a short drive for me and every time it's worth the visit. This is definitely a tourist attraction so keep that in mind when you visit. If it's summer and pretty out then the parking lot could be full and plenty of hikers. There's a really nice gift shop on the property where you can purchase items that help support our national parks, but it's only open late spring through early fall. There are also restrooms on site that I think are only open when the gift shop is open but never having used them I can't be positive. The hike is not a loop so you will see hikers returning from the falls but generally the path is wide enough so avoiding each other on the path is not an issue. The hike is pretty following the river and modest at best, uphill, but not so steep that the young and the elderly should avoid. Getting to the first set of cascades is pretty and worth visiting but to really see an amazing view of the gorge you must continue onto the first overlook to see spectacular views of the scenic gorge and valley. It's a more difficult hike as the path is not as wide and it is steeper to the overlook. But it's shorter then the first part of the hike to the cascades, and the view is amazing and worth the extra effort. There is still another hike past the overlook and there is also a hike that leads down to the river but that was rated as strenuous and being in my middle fifties did not sound like anything I'm ready to tackle.

Upon reading other reviews, I expected signage, a welcome area and the ability to figure out how to get to what. There was none of that. Used the address they give to navi to this place only to be on an unpaved, dirt, tiny ruddy forest service road for 6+ miles bobbing and weaving other cars, ruts, no guard rails, etc. No signage for where you were even going. Super crowded, it’s a free for all on where to park. Only bring an old car or suv you don’t mind getting beat to hell. Finally got to an actual parking area where bathrooms were. Bathrooms were so foul, I should’ve just went in the woods. We started hiking up the path that is aside of the bathrooms. Went to what we thought was the top and had a picnic lunch. We didn’t see any waterfalls or signage for waterfalls. I thought choosing a place that had so many reviews would be smart but this was a fail for sure. Pretty at whatever point we ate lunch at but not worth what we went thru to get there, park, etc.

I went here primarily to see Linville Falls. I did arrive closer to noon and was a bit surprised to see how busy it was. The parking lot, trails and viewing areas were all pretty crowded. Parking and entrance to the park is free.
The hike itself was more strenuous than I expected: lots of inclines plus step up and down to get to the viewing areas. Its a moderate hike overall but it was warmer that day so do bring plenty of water and even something to eat. There are 3 viewing areas. One and two were the best and honestly 3 was just so so in my opinion. The views are all from a distance and you really don't get close to the falls by any means. This was disappointing. Maybe there is a trail that gets you close to the falls but the main one certainly does not.
Parking and admission is free. Thee is a visitor center with restrooms and a small gift shop
Overall it was a nice way to spend a few hours outside but not exactly what I expected.

Now I understand why this is the most beautiful waterfall in NC. A tremendous volume of water and it is neat to see it from different views. All views are a short walk. When up high, it looks like the water goes inside the middle of the mountain and shoots out below. We've parked at the visitor center and also at the gravel lot- either lot is good.

The View is great. The hike is moderate. There is a 0.4 mile hike to the upper falls and another 0.4 mile hike to the larger view. The trail was a bit muddy. It was very busy and had to circle around a few times for parking.

We were at Linville gorge doing some rock climbing and after a good day of climbing decided to go check out Upper creek falls for some skinny dipping on our drive out. We had heard that it was a good nude use area due to the remote nature and relative common use as a nude area upstream of the falls. We parked in the gravel parking lot and took the short trail to the upper falls. There is a small wooden bridge and staircase at the end of the trail leading down to the falls and creek. The upper trail leads to the top of the upper falls. It is important to know that it is a long drop down the upper falls so going too close to the edge is not recommended. The trail crosses the creek above the falls and winds down to the base of the falls on the other side. Being long time naturists, we decided to go upstream from the upper falls. We scrambled along the boulders lining the creek. The first large swimming hole is right upstream from the stairs of the trail. There is a rope swing there and the upstream side is a nice smooth slide into the wide hole. It is still visible from the trail so we elected to cross the creek and head upstream farther. At the next hole, we were out of sight from the trail so we disrobed and continued our hike up stream to search for more holes. There are trails going up along the creek that made hiking fairly easy. We stopped finally at a large wide swimming hole with a large flat rock in the sun and spent several hours sunning and swimming. We didn’t see anyone the whole time there. We hiked back to the first upstream swimming hole before donning on clothes and heading back to the car. This is a great area for skinny dipping in clear mountain water on a hot day. We will definitely be back if we are in the area.

Beautiful... Trails. We saved our last trail for the "bottom". When we got down to the bottom of the falls... After a pretty rocky hike... To the river ..leading up to the falls.. We were surround by snakes. True story... Everywhere ... In front of us ..on .the sides ... I know snakes live near water... I just saying the bottom of the falls is a snake pit.. Be careful where you Step!!! We saw lots! One bigger than my 12 year old- hiking with us. Google "timber rattle snakes"! The upper trails are cleared off and less snakey.

You won't find it on any Blue Ridge Parkway map, but the best view of the gorge is an easy hike on a paved handicapped accessible trail along a scenic and fun National Forest gravel Road. From the parkway, exit on 221 just south of the Linville Falls area, and follow 221 south to the junction with 183. Turn right on to 183 and look for the signs for the Linville Gorge Wilderness. You'll be turning right on a reasonably well-maintained gravel road. The first turn-off is the trailhead for a .4 mile hike to a view of the falls. About four miles (and several ups and downs and corners with the accompanying shrieks from the girls in the car) further along, you come to the turn-off for Wisemen's View. It's absolutely worth the drive, which is part of the adventure; watch for the scenic views along the road. But I wouldn't attempt it on a rainy day without four-wheel drive. Also, if you like primitive camping, there are spacious, well-spaced campsites along the road. A wonderful off-the-beaten path trip. FYI: There is a latrine and plan for about 45 minutes of total travel time in and out on the gravel road. The trail to the view is paved, but there are stairs down to the absolute edge. The view will captivate you for as long as you let it. The more adventurous can ignore the barriers (some of which are missing) and get up close and personal with the view.

How long/strenuous is the hike to the lower falls from the parking lot?
Scritta in data 22 agosto 2018
The hike is mostly flat with a few inclines and steps. When you get to Rainbow falls, keep going to Turtle back falls, only 1/4 of a mile! The hike is worth the effort, Just do it!!

I would go to Lake James State Park to Paddy's Creek. You can rent a kayak for $5 per hr (2man) or just sit on the beach. Its safe and fun. The kids can bring noodles or a float. Its a lake and the water is brackish.
Or you may be interested in Looking Glass Falls near Sliding Rock. Sliding Rock is fun for the kids but they should know how to swim. Seems like Looking Glass Falls has an area next to the waterfall to swim and play. Thats my next trip.
