The museum provides a detailed history of the past 150 years of US South. Give yourself at least 90 minutes. It does not shy away from the shameful episodes the post-Civil War era. I found myself engaged in the first half of the museum with the older history. Things from the last 30-40 years or so were not as interesting. The museum is laid out in chronological order

This was a very interesting museum, very relevant. The focus is on the history from the Civil War to Present. Both positive and negative aspect are depicted. There are some interactive displays. Really glad we went.

My wife and I had visited this museum a number of years ago, and this was a worthwhile update and reminder of what we as a people did. This is not only a refection of the south, but of our country. We found that the exhibits are done in very good taste and a true depiction of who we were. The cost to go through was very reasonable, which makes it affordable for all to see.

The theme of historical change in the Deep South and Charlotte in particular was well presented. Both the positives and the negatives were covered in enlightening and challenging ways. While a number of historical references were common knowledge, the way they were integrated into local lore enhanced their meaning.
Of particular intrigue was the section on the demise of the "Brooklyn" area which is now largely a memory lost but not forgotten by those who grew up there. Having a slightly similar experience in my past, I was able to relate to their sense of loss.
(We parked in the garage next to the Museum as a convenience without prior consideration an the fee was $18. Across the street was outdoor parking for $10.)

An excellent museum. I did not expect such an informative interactive museum. We visited during COVID restrictions and it did not prevent us from enjoying the exhibits

Fascinating walk through the history of Charlotte and the South.
You'll see the cotton fields, cotton gins, and the people worked them. You'll see the racist decades of Jim Crow and Segregation, some of which still happens today.
You'll walk down a fascinating recreation of 1940s downtown Charlotte.
You'll see Charlotte go from agriculture to finance.
$10 well spent as far as I'm concerned.

I loved this place. It was nicely arranged, displays were neat and well done. It was not so huge to be overwhelming or make me feel like I had to hurry. The people were friendly and informative.

Hi, I'm coming to Charlotte and have 2 hours free on a Saturday morning. That that be enough time for 3 adults to see most of the museum?

Yes, it is a smaller museum but worth the visit. Fascinating view of the south AFTER the civil war.

How much time should I allow when visiting this museum?

This museum offers an experience. It depends on if you decide to immerse yourself in that experience both the historical periods as well as present day. If you are going with children who are say 11 years old and up I think you would want to stay longer. Let them spend time in the sharecroppers' and mill workers' shack. Let them notice difference between the poor white and black experience. Let them study the KKK artifacts. They will come a lot closer to a depth of knowing that is transforming. I would recommend the same for the "Know Justice, Know Peace" exhibit. If you take time to reflect on the visual, print and audio you can use it an discuss current news events from a variety of perspectives and develop a new understanding of justice.
