I recently visited a couple higher profile museums in the state and began to realize why this little, local museum deserves its praise. While there's a lot here I know about since the 1950s, there's a lot that I wanted to learn more about and quite a bit that I'm happy to revisit.

People in the cell phone generation can learn about why their parents still talk about the era when we never asked "Where are you?" on a phone call and younger kids can get a start at what makes phones of any generation work.

Who knew there was so much to see concerning telephones? The Telephone Museum packs a lot of stuff into a very small place. People who actually used land-lines will probably get a bit more out of the experience. The museum covers the behind-the-scenes workings of the telephone that you just didn't think much about.

The museum has a wide ranging collection of phones and phone equipment, some of which you can touch! Seeing the old switchboards really gives you a deeper appreciation of the technology.

The collection tends more towards written material on cards than fancy displays. Also pay attention to the numbers in the main display room, it's very easy to miss number 1 and thus not see the displays in chronological order. The best thing to do is spring the few extra bucks for a guided tour.

There is also a kid's section which seems to be geared to grade-schoolers. On an especially busy day you may be able to see the Firefighter's Museum which is directly below.

You may not travel to New Hampshire just for the Telephone Museum, but if you're in the state this museum and the Warner area is definitely worth a day trip (the Kearsarge Indian Museum and Mt. Kearsarge are also nearby).

There were a couple of reasons that we decided to check out this museum:
1) We both had educational and professional backgrounds involving telecommunications.
2) It was a convenient mid-way stopping point before lunch on our drive back to Boston from Vermont.

The museum is in a converted house and covers the (probably expanded) main floor. The ladies who staffed the place and sold us the tickets were friendly and gave us a quick overview before starting a short orientation video. After that finished, we wandered around at our own pace.

The museum was put together by some locals who had careers in telephony. Thus they had an inside track for getting obsolete equipment that was being replaced donated instead of destroyed. And once they had a core of exhibits, it was probably easier to get other items donated.

The exhibits are arranged roughly chronologically. It begins with Alexander Graham Bell and moves forward. There are many old phone sets, from the wall mounted wooden variety up through a shelf of 2000s-era cell phones. They also have a number of switchboard desks showing how manual connections worked. Though most of the items displayed are phones, they also have minor side-exhibits on telephone linemen, historical oddities (what town had the last manual switchboard into the 1980s), etc.

This may be somewhat of a niche museum, but I think most elementary school kids might enjoy it. If you are an adult with a general technical / engineering bent, you will also probably enjoy a stop here.

The NHTM is always pleasantly surprising with how modern they make an "old" subject. Each visit is a relaxing and refreshing experience full of genuinely fascinating information and unexpected fun. Rain or shine, the museum itself is cozy and the staff are full of warm smiles and a wellspring of knowledge. A must see in Warner!

Great little find.
No you can’t read and meander through with a 2yr& 1+ & 6 yrold. But they are captivated and eager to investigate. They have made some changes, good ones. The mini video is nice addition, more activities for the young, and like the color decor walls with phones. Yes, nice selfie op!
Always glad to support the small enterprises, great work and effort.
A bit out of the way… wish there was a combo place to visit near by.
We have been going to the little covered bridge very close, now that would be a great little park area to picnic…
Hey we enjoy finding the fun and interesting.

This place is fabulous! Stuffed to the gills with phones of all shapes and sizes and ages. You learn about the history of phones and the evolution of phones over the years. You can do some hands-on activities with operating a switchboard and telegraph machine. There is an exhibit on Alexander Graham Bell and his inventions and interests. This place far exceeded our expectations and was well worth the price of admission and a couple hours. You can see it all in less time, or you can spend way more.
Downstairs is the Warner Firefighters Museum, which has very limited hours, but if it's open be sure to check it out. It's worth another 15 minutes.

We visited as a bus group on a Saturday morning and were warmly welcomed. After a very informative and interesting introduction to the museum, everyone had time to look around and enjoy the many displays and information there. Don't let the smaller size of this museum fool you, it's a great take-in!

What a wonderful gem of a place. We were looking for a 'day trip' adventure from Boston, and the NHTM was the PERFECT spot.

The phones are definitely the star here...seeing so many models from way back when, and seeing the craftsmanship that went into them...it's amazing. Lots of information on the phones, and the process for which the invention came about.

We want to thank Graham, she was absolutely wonderful and informative when it came to any questions asked, and even demonstrated a few of the larger machines and switchboards.

There was a special exhibit while we were there on the evolution of train communication as well. A short introductory video started us on our journey and we spent a nice bit of time there reading all the information for the exhibit.

There was also a 'hands on' area where you can work a switchboard yourself. Located in Warner, NH, you will find yourself with other things to do in the area as well, so make the trip, bring the family (or your friends) and check out this unique and fun museum.
