The homestead is an amazing walk back in time due to the factual, and saucy commentary of the docents, as the guided tour takes us through history. The history of this time, is transformed as a presidential path to modern times. The Pierce relationship to the Bush family is illustrated with period paintings and historical comment. The insights into the character of the Pierce family, and the relationship with family members, was history I had not read before. It is amazing to see the designs of period furniture, period irons and stoves, bedding and quilts, and how the Pierce family did not have servants, but actually worked with the house staff. Commentary on dishes, playing cards, room setups, stencils on the walls, wall color and the history of many of the couches and chairs at this homestead brought Pierce, the man, to life. Piece was a man of power - but also a very tall man of knowledge and appreciation. The Homestead store is filled with information and items for all ages. There are books and pamphlets for those wanting more on Pierce, the President, the family man, the military officer, and the only President not to have a Vice President. Visit and find the answers..
STAY ON ROUTE 9 NORTH from the Homestead, and go to two fabulous museums in Warner, New Hampshire. Mt Kearsarge Indian Museum and The Nature Discovery Center. These three sites, along with the two covered bridges in Warner are worth, a photo stop and a day trip, or just an extended day, in New Hampshire.

We parked in their spacious lot for the 10 AM opening. After paying $5 each in the barn, we joined a VT couple for a one hour tour by the 16 year veteran director. The building complex was assembled by Benjamin Pierce, the Governor of NH and father of our 14th President, Franklin, who was brought up at this farm/roadhouse. It was full of period housewares and furniture but most unusual were the stenciled walls and the parlor wallpaper imported from Paris. Wonderful tour of this historic property.

Wonderful tour as described in many reviews. Our GPS took us to a different location about 20 minutes away. The impression we got from the State Park website did not do justice to the fascinating tour we took. If you like to visit Presidential homes you will love this one.

I enjoy visiting Presidential home sites. This one was really nice. Sue our tour guide was very nice, and informative. We are from Michigan and she even told us about the Pierces family connection to Michigan. Thanks Sue this was really enjoyable.

Decided to take a drive on the Currier and Ives Scenic Byways Trail. The Franklin Pierce Homestead was on the way and after living in NH for over forty years, we decided to go in for a tour.
It was wonderful and informative. Adam, our tour guide was knowledgeable and entertaining. It's a lovely and well preserved home with many original furnishings.
A must see for history buffs and NH residents especially.

We visited on Sunday, July 2, 2017. This is the 13th presidential property we have visited including libraries and museums. Earlier this week we went to the JFK and FDR lib/mus.
When you arrive there are signs directing you to the entrance in an old barn. We paid $5 each because we are from out of state, otherwise it is $4 for state residents. One of the guides told us that we could not take any pictures at all beyond this entrance barn. No in the house pictures.
We started in an add-on building to the original mansion. Our tour guide, Paula, was very informative and showed us all aspects of the home. She took her time to answer all of our questions. There are some items original to the Pierce family within the home.
The tour lasted one hour.
Have a guide leading a tour is great! I wish every presidential property would provide this service.

You don't know much about this president, for some good and not so good reasons, but after you have toured the Franklin Pierce presidential museum, you get a feeling that President Pierce may have gotten a bad rap. Very interesting tour. We were there during history tours and it was very fun and informing. If you are in the Hillsborough area, this is a must do. Faithfully reproduced and in very nice condition. A worthy visit.

The Franklin Pierce Homestead in Hillsborough, NH provides a glimpse into both the former President Franklin Pierce and his father Benjamin Pierce who actually built and owned the home. The home is located along a major road, which happens to be historically accurate. The hours vary depending on the season. When it is not the high season (summer) the home is only open on the weekends so make sure to plan accordingly. There is a cost to visit. For non-sate residents it is $5 which is very reasonable. For state residents under the age of 64 it is $4 and free for those above the age of 64 only. Kids for state residents are free. Active duty military are free as the Homestead participates in the blue Star Program. I didn't know that until later and was offered a refund, but declined as they could use a donation.
You can take a tour with Sara or one of the other docents or walk through on your own. However I would recommend taking a tour as you will learn a lot more. Sara provided a very detailed account of the Pierce's lives and the history of the home. She didn't sugarcoat anything, providing both favorable and unfavorable accounts. Franklin Pierce only lived here leading up to his presidency and much of the interesting history is of his father Benjamin and his wife. Most of the items in the home are from the original home, with a few other period pieces brought in to decorate the home. They've taken great lengths to refurbish the walls to their original design. They've left a couple of spots to show you what it looked like compared to the exact copy.
You should plan on spending at least an hour at the Franklin Pierce Homestead. The home is two stories with no elevator that I saw, although handicapped personnel unable to climb stairs will be able to see the first floor. There is no photography allowed inside, but you can take as many pictures of the outside. They have a bathroom for your use as well and a small gift store.
I would highly recommend visiting the Homestead. It provides a glimpse into one of the American Presidents not that well known whose history is as troubled as the times when he served. He was a close friend of Jefferson Davis and suffered for it. Make sure to read his letter to Davis in the small museum prior to entering the home.

We joined six other visitors on a rainy Sunday for a tour of the Franklin Pierce home. The 15th President was raised here but did not live here dur g or after his presidency. The tour was interesting, but the guide glossed over Pierce’s shortcomings. Most interesting is the house his father Benjamin Pierce built. It is one of the most well thought out colonial homes we have ever toured. Pierce was wealthy and spent his money well on this house.

I did. I have spent years driving by it, yeah yeah, there it is, and yesterday I stopped. It happened to be in the middle of a tour of the inside of the house, and if I pressed I think they would have let me join it, but I was on a road-trip home and didn't want to spend the time waiting. Actually getting out of the car (for five minutes, for pete's sake!) and strolling around the house (and gift shop) gives you a much greater appreciation for ye Olde American houses, which we should cherish. Well worth the stop.
